Bandsaw Operator (Manufacturing)



Job Description

Job Title: Bandsaw Operator Job Code: 104 & 108

Reports to: Supervisor FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY:

Operate a mechanical SmartSaw/band saw to cut/remove damaged lumber as needed in the refurbishing of wood pallets. Must have the ability to lift and handle wood pallets that weigh 75-85 lbs. Will be required to meet fast-paced production requirements and established daily and weekly production targets. Adhere to all company safety requirements to ensure a safe and productive work environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Comply with all safety guidelines. Ensure all Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is used at all times while performing job duties.
  • Operate mechanical Smartsaw in the CB or TD process. Perform basic adjustment to machine to include changing saw blades, table adjustments and ensure all safety guards are in place.
  • Demonstrate proper cutting techniques to maximize blade usage and minimize stress on the equipment.
  • Track production on required forms.
  • Clean band-saw operating area and restock lumber at end of every shift
  • May be required to work daily overtime and occasional Saturdays.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Connector Board (CB)

    • Inspect pallet to determine if Connector Board is broken across the width.
    • Determine if pallet has 3 broken Connector Boards and set aside for teardown approval.
    • Position broken CB pallet to align bandsaw blade where the correct Connector Board(s) will be properly cut out for replacement.
    • Remove ALL defective component(s) and throw them in the scrap wood bins.
    • Gather all needed components and position them in the pallet and align components so that the Connector Board(s) are placed where they are going to get repaired.

Teardown (TD)

    • Identify pallets that need to be torn down or scrapped are in accordance with the standard operating procedure and the provided allocation.
    • Segregate pallets identified for scrap or teardown so they do not re-enter the working pool.
    • Tear down pallet and recover as many usable lumber components as possible. Document all reclaimed lumber from the torn down pallet on a daily production form.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • Construction experience and knowledge of operating machinery is required.
  • Ability to operate, adjust and maintain power equipment.
  • Basic math skills required
  • Previous pallet experience is a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent lifting, pulling, carrying and flipping of 75 to 85 pound pallets.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time (at least 2 hours straight, four times in an 8-hour day).
  • Able to twist, bend, stoop, squat, reach above shoulder level and crouch on a frequent basis.
  • Able to use hands and feet simultaneously and perform repetitive movements.
  • Able to lift up to 100 pounds as needed
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work environment consists of occasional extreme temperature shifts ranging from very cold to very hot.
  • Exposure to dust and loud noise (hearing protection is provided)
  • Exposure to heavy equipment, moving conveyor and heavy fork lift traffic.

Symbia Band-saw Operators must have:

  • Some experience in construction and/or related field.
