Legal Support Assistant I/II - District Attorney (Finance)



The Riverside County District Attorney's Office is accepting applicants for Legal Support Assistants I/II for their Division of Victim Services. Working closely with the Law Office Supervisor, the incumbent will perform a wide variety of specialized and responsible clerical work involving the continual use of legal terminology and engage with victims of crime to provide information regarding Marsy's law and case updates. They will alsoCollect, maintain, and ensure the accuracy and confidentiality of data related to restitution and other case information process and track various legal documents, records, correspondence, and other related duties as required. =

About DVS

The Division of Victim Services (DVS) is a division within the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. DVS serves as a Victim/Witness Assistance Center pursuant to California Penal Code 13835 and is recognized by the Riverside County Board of Supervisors as the county's primary provider of comprehensive services to victims and witnesses of crime. DVS is dedicated to empowering victims, to ensuring victims' rights are respected, and to assisting them in navigating the complexities of the criminal justice system with compassion and support. DVS operates a number of programs that provide ongoing support to victims of crime: California Victim Compensation Board Claims Unit, K9 Facility Dog program, Mass Casualty Crisis Response Team (CRT), Crime Prevention Unit services dedicated to reducing youth engagement in criminal activity, and the community engagement program S.T.O.R.I.E.S.

• Serve as clerical support tothe Division of Victim Services team; schedule appointments, screen callers, and initiate reply to routine correspondence.

• Review and route calls from the public and/or in person and provide information with discretion and in accordance with established policies of confidentiality; make inquiries of individuals presenting documents or requesting documents to determine adherence to special legal requirements.

• Perform general office duties (e.g., filing, opening and distributing mail, maintaining logs, keeping statistics and preparing reports); utilize a variety of computer systems; may interpret legal, procedural or department prerequisites from the record to the public, law enforcement agencies and/or attorneys.

Legal Support Assistant II

•Engage with victims and witnesses to discuss their cases, ensuring they feel supported and informed throughout the legal process.

•Provide clear and concise explanations and updates regarding court proceedings and restitution processes.

•Communicate with victims and witnesses to address concerns and provide necessary information.

• Serve as clerical support to the Division of Victim Services, schedule appointments, screen callers, and initiate reply to routine correspondence.

• Address and resolve basic issues and complaints from victims and witnesses, providing empathetic and effective support, escalate complex issues to management, ensuring timely and appropriate resolution, assist with clerical errors and other administrative issues, maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

• Collect, maintain, and ensure the accuracy and confidentiality of data related to restitution and other case information, utilize data management tools to track and report case progress and outcomes, ensure data integrity by regularly reviewing and updating records as needed.

• Compile a variety of reports, locating sources of information and determining proper format for finished reports; convert general information into proper legal form; compose legal papers and complete legal documents for which general forms are available. Legal Support Assistant I

Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.

Experience: One year of clerical experience. (Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from an accredited college or university in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field or 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field may be substituted for the clerical experience.)

Legal Support Assistant II

Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a Certificate of Proficiency issued by the California State Board of Education, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.

AND

Option I

Experience: Two years of clerical experience, including one year in specialized legal services preparing and processing a variety of legal documents in a legal environment. (Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from an accredited college or university or 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education, or a closely related field may be substituted for the non-specialized clerical experience.)

OR

Option II

Experience: One year as a Legal Support Assistant I with the County of Riverside.

Knowledge of: Modern office practices and procedures, including preparing correspondence and reports, filing, and operating standard office equipment; current English usage in business contexts; statistical and fiscal recordkeeping principles and application; proper telephone techniques and basic computer skills.

Ability to: Engage with victims and witnesses to discuss their cases, ensuring they feel supported and informed throughout the legal process. Provide clear and concise explanations and updates regarding court proceedings and restitution processes. Perform general clerical work and learn specific operations of the office; learn legal terminology, codes, forms, documents, and the chronology of legal actions and deadlines required in the preparation, processing and tracking of documentation for attorneys' case files; review legal documents and records for correctness of form, sufficiency of information, and conformance with prescribed legal requirements; exercise good judgment and initiative in the performance of legal clerical work and carry out a variety of clerical activities related to assignments; communicate, verbally and in writing, to concisely obtain, record and relay information, explain procedures, forms, and processes with tact and courtesy to the general public, attorneys, and law enforcement officers; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public and explain to concerned parties the basic procedures of the judicial process as they relate to a variety of legal documents; spell correctly, construct grammatical sentences and make mathematical computations.If you have questions regarding this position, please contact, Ulysses Gerardo, at 951-955-5772 or e-mail at ugerardo@rivco.org .
