Marketing & Communications Writer (Project Management)



The Marketing & Communications Writer creates, writes, and edits content for a wide range of communication and marketing initiatives in support of the MarComm division's mission and objectives and in alignment with the University's goals.

Essential Duties: 

  • Writes and proofreads messaging for print and digital publication, to include but not limited to marketing materials, website content, news and feature articles, talking points, timely institutional announcements, video scripts, advertising copy, and press releases.
  • Writes original content for print, web, marketing, advertising, executive leadership, and press use by creatively compiling information collected through research, interviewing, and gathering materials from the requesting party.
  • Supports executive communications by developing talking points, speeches, scripts, letters, news release quotes, background materials, and other materials as needed.
  • Responsible for translating complex information into compelling, relatable narratives and strategically shaping content to advance major university priorities and initiatives.
  • Writes and distributes press releases and institutional announcements.
  • Ensures the messaging is accurate, clear, and fits within branding guidelines, messaging, quality, and proper formatting and style.
  • Conducts interviews, collects data, and proactively seeks information needed to accurately and credibly craft messages and content.
  • Edits, posts, and updates content on websites.
  • Works with requesting parties to ensure understanding of project needs and gather a sense of the target audience.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Must provide a portfolio of a diverse writing samples.

Required Education: Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field, AND: 

  • 36 months experience in writing, editing, and print or digital publications.

Equivalency/Substitution:  Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 84 months related experience

Skills:

  • Proven excellence in both written and verbal skills.
  • Proficient in copywriting, editing, proofreading and composition.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
  • Knowledge of the different media sites or sources.
  • Must be flexible to adjust tone and voice to connect with various target audiences, both internal and external, and to reflect the appropriate medium of distribution (marketing, advertising, informational).
  • Comfortable working with sensitive topics.
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to receive and implement feedback to align with strategic goals.
  • Interpersonal skills.

  • None

Required Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to communicate effectively and listen.  
  • Sit for prolonged periods.
  • Frequent keyboarding.  
  • Ability to engage in repetitive motions.
  • Standard Office Environment.  
  • Frequent exposure to pressure caused by deadlines and busy periods.
  • Some travel required.
