Job Summary:
The U.S. Geological Survey Great Lakes Science Center's (GLSC) mission is to meet the Nation's need for scientific information to restore, enhance, manage, and protect the living natural resources and their habitats in the Great Lakes Basin. To accomplish this mission, the Center's multidisciplinary program is structured around three research branches: (1) Ecosystem Health and Restoration, (2) Eastern Basin Ecosystems, and (3) Western Basin Ecosystems.
The purpose of this task order is to provide technician assistance the LOBS laboratory where further sample processing, fish aging, data collection and databasing tasks will occur. This position will provide support at the Lake Ontario Biological Station (LOBS) within the Eastern Ecosystem Branch of the Center.
Responsibilities:
The candidate shall perform the following tasks:
Conduct Field Investigations and sampling:
Assist in conducting field studies and surveys to collect fisheries and limnological data and/or specimens to support scientific studies
Participate aboard 25 ft and 70 ft research vessels for approximately 15-50 days per year in the collection of a fishery and limnological samples
Operate small boats up to 25 ft in length including trailering to and from sampling locations and follows all field sampling SOPs and established safety protocols
Assist in experimental fishing with gill nets and trawls. Identifies, sorts, and catalogues fish specimens
Assist in limnological sampling using plankton nets, ponar dredges and integrated water samplers
Identify, sort, and catalog limnological specimens (e.g., water, invertebrates, chl-a, etc.).
Prepare samples for storage and transports samples from the field to the lab.
Laboratory duties:
Prepare fishery and limnological samples for analysis.
Assist in obtaining physical and biological data from fish and limnological samples
Assist in the examination and analysis of field collections of biological material
Maintain accurate and up to date records of data obtained on samples collected in the field and on samples processed in the lab
Operate laboratory equipment (e.g., microscopes, balances, digital imaging systems, etc.)
Identify and enumerate zooplankton samples
Assist in collection, preparation and interpretation of fish aging structures.
Data entry and summaries:
Tabulate, summarize, and graph data obtained from samples.
Enter and check data in the USGS Oracle database.
Adherence to All Appropriate Branch and Center Procedures:
The candidate shall adhere to all pertinent GLSC and LOBS procedures and guidelines. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining detailed records as detailed in the Good Laboratory Practices Guidelines; following the research studies formulated by LOBS scientists; and following all GLSC safety and administrative guidance.
