This exciting Senior Scientist opportunity is in the Battery & Electrochemical systems group in the Research & Technology organization of Medtronic Energy & Component Center (MECC). The scientist will have the opportunity to create and develop battery solutions with novel materials and designs for future medical devices. The Battery & Electrochemical Systems group at Medtronic has a long, storied history of making significant contributions to the world of lithium metal and lithium ion batteries, especially pertaining to medical devices. The scientist will find great opportunities to contribute to the development of next generation of medical devices by creating novel energy solutions that can transform lives.

A Day in the Life:

  • Plan and execute experiments to evaluate new battery electrode materials and electrolytes; apply critical thinking and scientific principles to interpret results and present analysis to functional group and project group as necessary

  • Contribute to the development of design and performance models for batteries

  • Author test plans, reports, and white papers as necessary to document the work conducted

  • Stay current with state of the art in lithium metal and lithium ion battery literature and patents

  • Focus on contributing to Research & Technology projects, but also be willing to provide subject matter expertise to projects in partnering organizations such as Development and Operations as necessary

  • Communicate and establish relationships with external materials vendors as necessary

    Required:

    Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 4 years of experience in an industrial setting or an MS/PhD and at least two years of relevant experience.

    Nice to Have:

  • Knowledge of lithium metal and lithium ion battery materials, electrochemistry, materials characterization techniques

  • Hands on experience in building and testing battery prototypes with novel electrode materials and electrolytes, experienced in working in a dry rom, experience in working with battery test systems and potentiostats

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience with Python, R or MATLAB to process, visualize, analyze and model experimental data

  • Statistical analysis using JMP or Minitab, Design of experiments, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green Belt certification

  • Project management experience or similar leadership experience
