Freight Sourcing Manager - Road (Transportation)



 

National Gypsum Company is a fully integrated manufacturer and supplier of building and construction products worldwide including Gold Bond® BRAND gypsum wallboard, ProForm®  BRAND joint treatment products and PermaBase® BRAND cement board.  We have an immediate opening for a Freight Sourcing Manager - Road at our Charlotte, NC Headquarters  location.  This position will report to the Director, Logistics & Supply Chain.

 

Job Summary:

The Freight Sourcing Manager – Road is responsible for carrying out transparent and consolidated bidding processes across the NGC Transportation Network, allowing both savings and service improvements related to Freight. The primary focus of the Freight Sourcing Manager – Road is to enforce the use a regular freight rebid process and the use of contracts and supplier/carrier compliance while researching new opportunities, agreements, technology, and products that will improve Customer Service Levels and lower/control our Freight Cost Structure.

Major Job Responsibilities (not all inclusive):

  • Lead the negotiation process and decisions about supplier / carrier selection with a cross-team perspective [logistics, customer service, finance].
  • Develop and implement freight procurement strategies for key freight spending categories for over the road freight for outbound sales orders, inbound raw materials, and plant stock transport orders, across all road means of transportation [flatbed, van, refrigerated, container].
  • Monitor and control and report the performance of expenditure categories and the respective impact on EBITDA.  Distinguish between rate impact and actual distribution/lane usage impact.
  • Drive the necessary improvements that impact the productivity of spending categories [line haul, fuel, assessorial charges].
  • Direct / lead and grow Freight Sourcing Manager – Rail and Marine.  Ensure this associate is fully versed in best rail and marine transportation options and is cross trained on over the road freight, as well.
  • Monitor the implementation of and the fulfillment of freight contracts according to established goals.
  • Promote the best practices of the freight categories of in the different NGC business units.
  • Enforce internal and external policies.
  • Lead the freight sourcing process in order to achieve Cost Reduction and improved Service Levels.
  • Manage sourcing of over $260 million annual planned road freight expense.
  • Administer/manage supplier/carrier contracts and continuous supplier performance.
  • Follow up on the price variation versus contracted rates and maximize the savings.
  • Identify category and freight cost savings opportunities with a Network View.
  • Develop freight sourcing strategies utilizing marketplace competition, and multiple freight contract and carrier types [semi-dedicated, dedicated, 3PL, broker].
  • Manage the competitive freight sourcing process with internal stakeholders (RFI/RFQ/RFP).
  • Work with internal customers/vendors to support strategic sourcing initiatives.
  • Negotiate vendor/carrier agreements and contracts in partnership with stakeholders.
  • Draft, review and revise contract documents in accordance with legal guidelines.
  • Proactively manage major carrier contract renewals and renegotiations.
  • Monitor major vendor/carrier performance with logistics managers and business unit relationship owners.
  • Provide expenditure analysis and identification of spend outside preferred vendor/carrier contracts and outside of preferred distribution.
  • Develop, implement and improve strategic freight sourcing processes and tools.
  • Deliver and Report Sustainable Freight Cost Reduction and Cost Avoidance Achievements.

 

  •  
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Finance, Business, or other closely related fields preferred.
  • 10-15+ years of logistics, freight sourcing and negotiating agreements with carriers.
  • Extensive experience sourcing and qualifying carriers – across all road means of transport.
  • Ability to perform 25% travel.
  • Basic knowledge of laws and regulations at the global, country, and local levels relevant to the logistics industry to ensure that the behavior of the organization is honest, ethical and professional.
  • Solid negotiation skills with the ability to persuade, influence and explore alternatives to reach an outcome that will gain acceptance of all parties and meet the organization's strategic freight procurement objectives.
  • Strong analytical skills with a high capacity to synthesize complex and diverse information relative to sourcing processes. 
  • Demonstrated strong skills in analysis tools such as Excel and Access, and with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau.
  • Self-starter with proven ability to challenge the status quo, prioritize and execute activities independently and proactively anticipate potential disruptions.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to identify and enact improvement opportunities.
  • Experience with SAP / ERP and TM systems is beneficial.
