Position Summary:

Dr. Matt McCary's research group in the Department of BioSciences is looking to hire a Research Technician I with a background in horticulture, botany, ecology, biology, or related field. Dr. McCary's research investigates how plant traits and environmental changes shape biodiversity and ecosystem processes.

This is a one-year term-limited position with the possibility of renewal based on performance and funding based on performance and funding.

Ideal Candidate Statement:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and independent technician who is passionate about plant care and experimental research. The ideal candidate will be responsible for growing and maintaining plants in both greenhouse and field settings, assisting with experimental setup and maintenance, and helping troubleshoot plant growth issues using best horticultural practices, including growing plants from seed. The position also involves routine maintenance of field sites and lab equipment, and occasional driving to remote research locations.

The successful candidate should have experience growing plants, be able to work independently and as part of a team, and demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills.

Workplace Requirements:

Anticipate hourly salary: $18. This is a full-time non-exempt (hourly) position.

On campus position: This position is exclusively on-site, necessitating all duties to be performed in-person at Rice University or remote research locations. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change.

*Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.

This position is funded by a grant, soft and/or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of funding.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years in the area of botany, horticulture, ecology, biology, or related discipline
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
  • Must possess (or have the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire) and maintain a valid Texas driver's license with no more than three moving violations and/or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past five years.

Skills
  • Skilled at growing and maintaining plants, including propagation and pest management
  • Ability to troubleshoot plant health problems and apply best growing practices
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to listen and communicate effectively
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Competency with word processing, spreadsheets, and electronic data entry software, such as Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and safety protocols
  • Willingness to work outdoors in variable weather conditions
  • Basic math and research skills
  • Ability to conduct basic evaluation and analysis of data
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards

Essential Functions:
  • Grows and maintains experimental plants in greenhouse and field environments
  • Knows how to grow plants from seeds and how to transplant them
  • Maintains field and lab experiments and records observations systematically
  • Assists in plant propagation, pest and disease monitoring, and implementing best horticultural practices
  • Aids in research setup, data collection, and sample processing
  • Prepares procurement requests, organizes materials and inventory, and maintains data records
  • Drives to field sites and transports materials or samples as needed
  • Assists in maintaining a safe and clean working environment in both lab and field settings
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
