2024 Audit Intern (Construction)

Summer Intern Assignment

The intern program at Salem Five Bank is a paid summer internship. Internships are open to college students completing their sophomore or junior years. This is a five day per week assignment, (M-F) 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  (2024 program dates are Tuesday, May 28, 2024 through Friday, August 9, 2024.)

During the assignment, the intern will have the opportunity to work with members of the Internal Audit Department and leadership throughout Salem Five Bank to gain a working knowledge of both the internal audit profession and overall business operations at a mutual savings bank.  The intern will also gain valuable experience under the direction of an experienced audit professional.  Throughout the internship, the intern will participate in Salem Five events and contribute to internal audit processes and projects. 

The intern will join the team after completing an Intern Orientation on their first day.

Day 1

The intern will meet with a representative from Human Resources for orientation to Salem Five. The intern will then meet with Veronica Elias, VP Audit Manager and Christopher Horne, AVP Sr Auditor II who will provide an overview of the department and provide the intern with their Week 1 schedule.  The intern will report to Christopher Horne throughout the internship program.  A lunch will be scheduled and introductions to other team members will be made over the course of the first week to learn about each member's role and responsibilities within the department.

Development and Training
 

The intern will develop an understanding of key internal audit concepts and methodologies through guidance provided by Internal Audit Department members, access to departmental procedures, and through direct application of job responsibilities.  The intern will also learn about key areas of the Bank's operations and related regulations through formal eLearning course assignments.

Responsibilities
 

The intern will be involved with several initiatives over the course of the program.  The focus will include a broad and dynamic range of activities directly related to the audit discipline.  Examples may include the following:

Independently and objectively evaluate risk as it relates to Salem Five's governance, operations, and information systems regarding the:

  • Reliability and integrity of financial, managerial, and operational information,
  • Effectiveness and efficiency of operations,
  • Safeguarding of assets, and
  • Compliance with laws, banking regulations, policies, and procedures.

Under the guidance of an experienced audit professional, and as defined through the Institution of Internal Auditor's International Professional Practices Framework, the intern may:

  • Review the effectiveness of operating procedures and internal controls through a combination of analysis and testing,
  • Prepare audit work papers that support Internal Audit's conclusions, and
  • Identify findings or opportunities for enhancements through root cause analysis and discussions with Internal Audit and Bank management.
Projects and Special Assignments
 

Although the intern's focus will be to participate in and perform tasks related to internal audits, there will be specific projects of varying complexity to complete during the program.  These projects will be essential to the Internal Audit Department's strategic objectives.
