Engineer 1, Process Development (Finance)
We are looking for a driven, motivated, Supplier focused Process Engineer to interface with Illumina's reagent suppliers and join our growing consumables product development and sustaining team. The Supplier Process Engineer will provide technical expertise to the new product introduction and production sustaining teams with regards to a range of critical reagent consumables. This individual will be responsible for supplier process development, supplier risk reduction, and ensuring that reagents are adequately characterized to meet stringent high volume manufacturing requirements. She/he will partner with R&D, Quality, NPI and Sustaining Process Development, and Supply Chain to sustain and improve delivered products with a focus on product robustness, quality, production health, and cost. She/he will work with other stakeholders to identify business needs, gather requirements, and help determine the actions necessary to drive performance improvement.
Work with suppliers to define key process characterization requirements to ensure that supplied consumables are adequately controlled and de-risked.
Work with internal SMEs, stakeholders from engineering, supply chain, and supplier quality to properly define timelines, budget, and integrated evaluation and qualification plans.
Collaborate with Development, Process Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, and other departments as needed to address issues with and set appropriate specifications for reagents, reagent filling, and raw material supplied products
Work with contract manufacturers to transfer Illumina's internal processes and enable process scale up. Reagent synthesis, reagent fill operations, and packing are few examples.
Technical point of contact for sustaining suppliers (NCRs, SCARs, SCNs, etc.)
Take initiative to develop and implement new processes to collect data around and analyze the health of incoming material
Lead or lend expertise in various cross-functional jobs/efforts and serve as the internal SME for supplier manufacturing processes
Identify and implement corrective measures for supplied product variation
Effective communication style working with all levels of organizational structure, through multiple departments, and across global sites
Experience in Analytical, Organic, or Polymer Chemistry with focus on reaction mechanisms, yield, and purity
Experience in Nucleotide chemistry, Oligos, and DNA sequencing applications
Experience in chemical separation and purification techniques
Experience in lyophilization, drying, sublimation and other freeze drying commercial applications
Experience in process automation, reagent filling operations, and chemical process scale up
Experience and understanding of analytical investigation techniques such as AFM, SEM, EDX, XPS, FTIR, Ellipsometry, TEM, Mass Spec highly preferred
Experience with failure analysis and 8D methodology preferred.
Experience interfacing with suppliers in an engineering context and driving spec setting activities, process improvement, and component qualifications is highly preferred
Ability to understnd data in whatever format it's presented, and effectively transform it to communicate a story and preferred action plan
Knowledge of with Statistical Process Control and DOE techniques
Expert user of Excel, proficient in Word, Outlook, PowerPoint
Demonstrated ability to work with ambiguous requirements, adapt quickly, and learn
Detail oriented, proactive, works independently, works well with others
High degree of initiative and ownership, as well as a proven history of delivering results while working with several different departments in a fast-paced environment
Strong organizational skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Willingness to travel (up to 20%)
B.S./M.S. in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, or related field with relevant experience in product development, production sustaining, process development, design, scale-up, improvement and validation.
