The AAN works closely with the American Brain Foundation, housed in the Academy's headquarters, and the Child Neurology Foundation, located in Kentucky.
POSITION SUMMARY:ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Publication Management
•Partners with Executive Editor to drive strategic growth and business success of Journals through publishing technologies and editorial outreach
•Partners with Executive Editor to establish annual objectives, marketing strategies, business plans for all journals, and preparations for editorial board meetings and retreat workshops
•Develops and implements content growth and open access strategies in conjunction with Executive Editor, physician editors, and publisher
•Researches specifications and proposals for special projects and collaborations with the publisher and other organizations
•Leverages publisher and website statistical analysis to assist physician editors in making editorial decisions
•Monitors turnaround times for Editors and staff members and assesses competition's processes
Leadership
•Provides leadership to journal staff to implement improvements in workflow, ensure meeting of weekly deadlines, and troubleshoot peer review and post-acceptance issues
•Backs up Managing and Production Editors during high-throughput periods/vacations.
•Oversees and facilitates coordination among Managing Editors and the Journals digital team to request technology solutions from online platform provider and publisher.
•Monitors integrity and confidentiality to ensure ethical publication practice, researches potential breaches of publication ethics
•Provides direct employee supervision, including selection, training, performance management, compensation administration, and termination of employees
•Project Leadership – Identification and initiation of special projects and issues
Vendor Management
•Collaborates with journal's Managing Editors and Executive editor to coordinate operational activities related to the AAN publisher and other vendors
•Resolves conflicts with publisher, online publisher, and other vendors
Operations
•Ensures appropriate coordination and communication of journal policy across all journals and stakeholders
•Ensure journal policies are clearly written and updated regularly
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
•Bachelor's degree is required and a Master's degree is preferred. Degree may be in Publishing, English, Humanities, or Biological Science area.
Experience:
•Minimum 10 years' experience in managing scientific journals
•Minimum 5 years' experience successfully leading others in a scholarly publishing team
•Preferred Experience: Leading Leaders
•Demonstrated experience with successful vendor relationship management in the scholarly publication industry
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
•Understands concepts related to production of journal articles, enhanced features, and multi-media news releases
•Knowledge of scholarly journal formats
•Must be proficient in MS Word, PPT, and Excel
•Demonstrated advanced oral and written communication skills are required
•Advanced organizational skills, including planning, delegating, program development
•Familiarity with AMA Manual of Style
•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
•Excellent time management and continuous improvement skills
•Demonstrated ability to maintain collaborative working relationships
•Strong emotional intelligence, professionalism and high-level customer service orientation
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Travel Requirements: Some travel required – approximately 10%
Location: Minneapolis, MN
Schedule: Occasional weekends and evenings required
Physical Requirements: Standard office setting, with ability to sit for long periods of time, occasional use of stairs; regular use of computer and office equipment, lifting up to 25 lbs.
