Specialist, Payroll (Administrative)



Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Payroll Specialist at Cooper Standard processes and maintains payroll for salary and hourly employees located in the US and Canada.  This role is responsible for all post payroll processing, including the distribution of data to various departments, divisions and locations.  Additionally, the role provides payroll support to all areas within the company.  The payroll specialist is also responsible for annual bonus processing and year end payroll review.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Process weekly, bi-weekly and monthly payrolls for employees in a timely and accurate manner
  • Maintains and updates employee payroll information in the system such as garnishments, tax changes, and direct deposits
  • Canadian payroll backup for payroll processing and support
  • Responsible for coordinating timely and accurate payroll processing for multiple off-site locations
  • Maintain severance processing
  • Ensure proper completion of HCM entries and paperwork by HR Associates
  • Respond to inquiries relating to salary wage assignments or child support agreements
  • Provide requested information to the Finance Department relating to payroll charges, funding and account reconciliation
  • Organize and file payroll records and tax documentation
  • Prepare payment requests for various voluntary payroll deductions
  • Assist in problem solving and special projects within the Payroll Department
  • Maintain hands on knowledge of all processes, tasks, and technical aspects of payroll
  • Answer emails and phone calls from locations and employees concerning time and pay issues
  • Process bonus payments and annual regular rate overtime adjustments
  • Process relocation, expatriate and equity payments 
  • Provide monthly information relating to expatriate earnings and assist with annual reconciliation and tax gross ups
  • Issue on demand payments and direct deposit reversals
  • Interface with the social security administration to verify employee information
  • Maintain wire transfer detail and payroll summary reconciliation and interface with Treasury and General Accounting, as needed
  • Provide weekly funding to benefits for 401k, resolve any discrepancies timely
  • Conduct routine review of tax and other filings prepared by payroll vendor
  • Stay current on changes in tax regulations, filing requirements; ensure compliance
  • Identify training needs, and makes suggestions for required training to ensure accurate and timely processed payrolls
  • Remain compliant with internal control and audit compliance, participate in periodic audits
  • Utilize methods of continuous improvement and implement improved methods for processing

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or HR or equivalent combination of education and experience is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience in Payroll for a Mid to large sized organization.
  • Thorough knowledge of multi state payroll and payroll taxation, for both US and Canadian payrolls
  • Proficient in MS Excel
  • Ability to effectively prioritize workload, multi-task and manage changes in direction
  • Strong understanding of HR data elements and dependencies
  • Strong ability to interact with all levels of the organization

Work Environment:

Position is based in Northville, MI and initially would be remote. Opportunities to work from other Cooper Standard facilities may exist.
