POSITION QUALIFICATION SUMMARY: In the Technologist role you will be a member of the Metals, Combustion & Energy Applications Research & Development (R&D) team. Working with other technologists and technicians, and under the direction of our engineers, you will be involved in all aspects of designing, procuring materials and supplies, fabricating, assembly and operating experimental systems for investigating new industrial gas applications in primary metal-making, glass, combustion and pyro-metallurgical processes. Successful candidates should demonstrate high levels of leadership capability, a focus on safety, strong verbal and written communication skills, a team-oriented focus, and an ability to find innovative technical solutions that best meet the needs of the customer. This will require you to explore and apply technical and mechanical skills as you work independently and collaboratively with engineers and other technicians in the development of industrial gas applications. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES: - Design lab and pilot scale systems and procure materials and supplies, fabricate and assemble, operate and trouble-shoot experimental setups, and high temperature furnaces and/or combustion equipment - Metal-working, pipefitting, mechanical design and assembly including potentially welding and machining of metal components - Computer-aided design (CAD) of lances, spargers, burners and similar experimental equipment - Fabricate, operate, calibrate and maintain analytical instrumentation and control systems - Interpret piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) and assemble gas delivery equipment including piping, valves, regulators, pressure relief components, etc. - Integrate instrumentation, control and data acquisition systems into experiments and products, program and document control systems - Document designs, operating procedures and prepare reports - Setup and execute R&D experiments including some data analysis - Prepare for and participate in safety reviews and safety related documentation - Travel to customer sites (10% - 15% of the time) to implement and trial newly developed technologies Basic: - Strong mechanical aptitude is a necessity - A strong focus on safety and broad knowledge of a range of equipment, tools, techniques for fabrication, setup and operation of experimental equipment - Associate Degree, or related experience/training relevant to description of duties above - Able to travel domestically and internationally to customer sites - Strong communications skills, the ability to "self-start" with minimal direction, strong organizational skills and the ability to work with others in a team environment - 10+ years of experience in R&D related work Preferred: - Experience with industrial gas supply equipment, instrumentation, and control systems - CAD design skills are highly desired - Welding and/or machining skills are desired - Experience and skills in instrumentation, control and data acquisition are desired All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, protected veteran status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other reason prohibited by applicable law.
