Executive Director, Learning Development (Education)



REPORTS TO:  Chief Technology Officer  

DIRECT REPORTS:  Learning Development Directors

 

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:    

Internal: Directors and Executive Directors within Learning and Technology Solutions.  VP of Product, VP of Operations, Sales VP(s); Learning Development management team and staff; Chief Technology Officer, Company President, various members of the Executive Learnership team, Product Management Directors.    

External: Clients, Professional associations and organizations members; subject matter experts, independent contractors who support Learning Development.  

 

SUMMARY:

 

Primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of all Management Concepts learning products, including but not limited to, new design and updates of both client projects and corporate portfolio.  Ensure company and client learning products are of the highest quality in terms of technical accuracy, appearance, and format.  Coordinate with Product Management Director team to revise learning products to improve learning outcomes, maintain relevancy, implement improved learning methods, and adjust to market.  Performance is measured by courseware quality (as reflected in instructor and customer product evaluations); on-time delivery of all projects, and effective resource utilization, including learning and development staff and independent consultants. 

 

Work with the company's executive leadership to ensure alignment with company vision and mission while keeping division staff informed of relevant policies, procedures, instructional strategies, and emerging business concerns related to the design and development of all training products. Consult with staff on contract solicitations and other business opportunities, analyze client needs and recommend courses of action.  Work with division staff to formulate and propose client solutions, establish and monitor project and department budgets processes and standards, reports financial status to other department executives and ensure each project is completed on time and within budget.

 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set the strategic direction for Learning Development (LD) and oversee the planning, shaping and refinement of curriculum based on intelligence gathered in strategic planning efforts
  • Lead initiatives related to course modalities and improved technology.
  • Monitor and enhance subject matter and instructional issues associated with curriculum to ensure alignment with business strategy and in order to move the company forward and stay competitive.
  • Track emerging issues and opportunities; research, identify and evaluate potential steps forward
  • Support and ensure department adherence to processes and procedures
  • In consultation with internal and external clients as well as LD management staff, ensure course currency, accuracy and quality at the highest possible level(s).
  • Continually explore ways to improve the effectiveness of learning products and make work with LD management staff to implement improvements.
  • Provide oversight for and support LD management team in resourcing and management of projects/programs
  • Lead thought leadership initiatives in support of Learning Development and the company
  • Provide leadership to LD staff and create a culture of collaboration and success; implement a plan for teamwork and partnership within the organization; establish rules of cooperation and support

 

 

 

 

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of instructional methods and training techniques, including curriculum design principles and blended learning strategies
  • Knowledge of project management techniques, including balancing competing demands, MS Project schedules, minimizing scope creep, and establishing project thresholds
  • Proven ability to manage multi-demand and multi-priority projects simultaneously
  • Highly developed people management skills, able to manage and motivate teams to achieve business and personal goals
  • Ability to lead a team through significant change
  • Ability to think creatively, solve problems, and conduct effective meetings
  • Ability to make effective and timely decisions
  • Ability to lead projects to completion with sound planning and follow-through

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Familiarity with learning content management systems, Xyleme a plus
  • Familiarity with single source development and reusable learning objects a plus

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Master's degree with specialization in instructional design, adult education, or a related field preferred
  • Experience designing/developing competency-based, student-centered training for adults required
  • 10-12  years of managing people and teams preferred
  • Project management experience preferred
