Assistant Superintendent (Project Management)
SUMMARY: The Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, reporting directly to the Director, Agronomy, directs and participates in the maintenance of the golf course tees, greens, fairways, and cart paths. The Asst Superintendent supervises the maintenance and repair of all motorized and other mechanical equipment, and does other related work as required. The ultimate goal for our Groundskeeping staff is to maintain the pristine condition of the golf course for which Rolling Hills Country Club is widely known. The Assistant Superintendent may serve in the Directors capacity during his/her absence.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Director, Agronomy, assist in the planning and supervising of the maintenance of greens, tees, fairways, and landscape beds.Schedule work and supervise the employees and their safe use of the equipment; instruct operators on the safe operation and care of the mowing and other equipment; supervise pesticide applications and/or operate and calibrate pesticide application equipment; supervise and participate in the operation and maintenance of pumps, as well as the maintenance of irrigation and drainage systems.Establish and enforce safe operating procedures and work standards that will ensure adequate performance and personal safety. Train and direct activities of employees who perform duties such as landscaping, mowing turf, irrigating, or pruning trees and shrubs; schedule work for crews depending on work priorities, crew and equipment availability, and weather conditions. Perform personnel-related activities such as hiring employees, evaluating staff performance, and taking disciplinary action when performance problems occur. Perform administrative duties such as authorizing leaves and processing semi-monthly time sheets; investigate work-related complaints in order to verify problems and determine responses.Inspect completed work to ensure conformance to specifications, standards, and contract requirements. Monitor project activities to ensure that instructions are followed, deadlines are met, and schedules are maintained. Keep current inventory of supplies of tools, equipment, and materials to ensure that sufficient supplies are available at all times and items are in usable condition. Confer with other Supervisors to coordinate work activities with those from other departments. Direct or perform mixing and application of fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Review contracts or work assignments to determine service, machine, and workforce requirements for jobs. Identify diseases and pests affecting turf and landscaping, and order appropriate treatments. Coordinate and supervise outside contractors performing on property. Other duties as assigned.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Skilled in the use of powered equipment and maintenance vehicles such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, blowers, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.Ability to follow planned landscaping designs to develop landscaping project budgets, timelines, and procedures.Ability to interact with members and staff on all levels in a professional, positive, and friendly manner.Ability to comprehend and carry out instructions.Ability to work all shifts days, nights, weekends, and holidays.Ability to communicate with golf course management and staff; Bilingual a plus.
EXPERIENCE:
3+ years experience in golf course management requiredKnowledge of methods and materials used in grounds and landscape area construction/maintenance work highly desired
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS:
High school diploma/GEDBachelors Degree preferred, with focus in Agronomy/Agriculture highly desiredQAC, Qualified Applicator Certificate, required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to bend, stoop, lift and/or carry items up to 25 lbs., up to 50 lbs. with assistanceAbility to stand for prolonged periods of timeAbility to work indoors/outdoors, in many weather conditions
