(Sr.) Manager, Outage Analysis Technologies (Transportation)



Flexible Work Arrangement - Hybrid

The (Sr.) Manager, Outage Analysis Technologies provides oversight and management of engineers responsible for developing and supporting all software applications, systems, and technologies required for the analysis of the bulk power transmission system as well as tools utilized to support Dispatch.  The department is responsible for the following:

  • providing technical leadership in the development of outage analysis tools and technologies required to support the Operations Division current needs and automation opportunities to prepare for future expansion of the PJM system and the efficient use of PJM resources

  • coordinating the implementation of new tools as part of the overall operations toolset with other PJM departments;

  • providing insight and evaluation of new technologies applicable to operations and the industry in general

  • support a matrixed team of Outage Analysis Technologies and Transmission Operations engineers in the coordination of generation and transmission outages and analysis during the operational timeframe including internal coordination with Reliability Engineers, Dispatch, and the PJM Generation Department with the common goal of ensuring reliable and efficient operations of the PJM RTO.

This Manager will keep pace with the demands of a rapidly growing business, anticipate problems and synthesize appropriate solutions, and provide the leadership necessary to effectively implement these initiatives. 

The Manager works as a member of the Operations Support leadership team to develop improvements in the systems, tools, and processes used in the analysis of the PJM Bulk Electric System.  The Manager works closely with the PJM Transmission Operations, PJM Planning and PJM Applied Solutions Departments as well as PJM Transmission Owners and PJM Generation Owners.

The manager of Outage Analysis Technologies will work closely with the manager of Transmission Operations as the staff for each department will be matrixed to support activities associated with both departments to help ensure diversity of work assignments and promote cross-training and employee engagement.


Essential Functions:
 

  • Creates the department vision, strategy, goals and objectives and communicates it to departmental staff.

  • Manages and coordinates the design, development and implementation of PJM's outage analysis and operational tools across the Operations Division and with the Applied Innovation Department.

  • Maintains an exceptional level of customer focus both internally and externally with stakeholders/users. Maintains an inspired culture that is time based and centered on integrity and customer focus.

  • Monitors and analyzes existing study methods and promotes the development of new and/or more efficient methods, as well as the introduction of improved and emerging technologies into operational processes.

  • Demonstrates an in-depth understanding of power system engineering concepts, principles, theories, regulations, standards, reliability concepts and techniques especially as they apply to PJM operations, planning and markets.

  • Manages and coordinates large and complex assignments that support present and future needs of the PJM System. Provides direction and participation in the development of tools and input/output displays used by the PJM system operators and reliability engineers.

  • Acts as a technical resource assisting the Transmission Operations and Applied Solutions Departments with transmission outage analysis programs and algorithms.

  • Represents PJM at various industry forums, conferences and seminars.

  • Actively involved in NERC and RRO compliance initiatives, serving as an operations SME.

  • Empowers staff to complete duties aligned with the vision. Instructs, leads, assigns work, or provides technical assistance/training to subordinates and technical/professional personnel as required.

  • Consolidates improvements and produces effective change initiatives.

Characteristics & Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience

  • At least 5 years of work experience

  • At least 2+ years of leadership experience in a managerial/supervisory role.


Preferred:

  • MBA, Business Administration

  • 5-10 years of leadership experience in a managerial/supervisory role.

  • Ability and desire to build relationships and interact with a wide range of stakeholders and staff to maintain and enhance PJM's customer service reputation

  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
