Physician - Gastroenterology (Healthcare)
Core Duties:
• Perform a full range of physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the MTF.
• Direct, perform, or assist in the instruction of other health care professionals within the scope of the clinical privileges or responsibilities.
• Examine, diagnose, treat or prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
• Provide preventive and health maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care skills through education and counseling.
• Order diagnostic tests as applicable as well as request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated.
• Technically proficient in directing and teaching other medical staff, providing educational lectures and participating in the provision of in-service training to clinic staff members. Such direction and interaction will adhere to Government and professional clinical standards and accepted clinical protocols.
The additional duties for the HCW are as follows:
• Provide telephonic and in person consultation after hours requested for all local MTFs emergency departments and inpatient service, and be able to perform an emergency endoscopy within 60 minutes of request.
• Provide outpatient gastroenterology (GI) consultations and procedures, including conscious sedation, flexible sigmoidoscopies, esophagogastroduodenoscopies, and colonoscopies in a GI department providing specialty services.
• Manage the medical care of patients from the ages of young adult through geriatrics.
• Provide a full range of outpatient gastroenterology services within the scope of privileging by the MTF.
• Request diagnostic tests for each patient as needed.
• Provide indicated treatment for each complaint by each patient, as needed.
• Provide medical care, in complex or distress cases, summon the appropriate specialist when deemed necessary, and continue medical management as necessary.
• Prescribe medications as indicated by the diagnosis and medical condition.
• Provide follow-up care as required.
• Refer stable patients to specialty clinics by consultation within the guidelines of the MTF as required.
• Provide consultation services for the MTF clinics and patients when needed via telephone or in person.
• Make a decision and disposition and record on the appropriate form as to whether to send the patient home, to full duty, to quarters, or refer the patient to a consultant.
• Provide the patient with complete and appropriate instructions regarding medication, limitations, and follow-up plans.
• Provide and document medical advice to patients by telephone as appropriate and in accordance with the MTF protocol.
• Provide pathology and laboratory results per clinic policy.
• Be responsible for Department of Defense (DoD) equipment and material while performing procedures.
The Physician-Gastroenterology will generally work between the hours of 0700-1800 Monday-Friday (for 8 hrs depending on OR/ENDO schedule; on call after hours 1600-0700 weekdays, 0700-0700 weekends or holiday and family days).
