Responsibilities
Consumer Scientist I, II, III assists, performs and directs operations of the Application Lab. This involves defining and organizing test schedules, assuring that test procedures and results are documented and interpreting results as required for engineering or marketing understanding. These positions function within the Design Engineering Department which is comprised of a team of associates in which the rapid development of highly featured, high value products is required. The department is comprised of three sections: New Product Development, Sustaining Engineering, and Labs & Approvals. New products are developed through concurrent engineering practices, requiring department members to understand critical inter-relationships between different departments. The ability to make sound design decisions based on product knowledge and manufacturing processes is key. This position requires an individual to be self-motivated, working with minimal supervision, while achieving high quality end results.
Level I, II, III (Common Functions)
Organizes Application Lab testing and projects
Develops questionnaires and analyzes feedback from field test appliances participants and delivers results through presentations.
Contributes to contents of Use and Care Manuals and other consumer literature.
Use various types of equipment to evaluate product function.
Provides product testing training.
Provides consultation on food, cooking matters and consumer appliance use.
Participates on Product Development Teams.
Contributes to ISO documentation and training
Participates in Professional Organizations and BSH worldwide Consumer Scientists network.
Establish lab test plans, prepare test requests, with required documentation, for work in application lab, conduct required testing and prepare and report the final results and conclusions.
Monitors documentation of test units and test results.
Keeps current on food and appliance testing and trends
Edits all product literature.
Support production with on-line troubleshooting and de-bugging during pilot and after release to production.
Analyze problems, possible root causes and solutions.
Level II, III Additional Functions
Presents testing data to multiple levels of the organization
Conducts performance testing of cooking products, analyzes test data, and writes comprehensive reports while developing products and competitive benchmark tests Contributes to content and questions for cooking field test program.
Write test procedures, data collection sheets and test protocol
Coordinates field testing programs.
Performs Bench Mark testing, documentation and summaries.
Provides product testing training for Consumer Scientists and lab technicians.
Provides expert consultation on food, cooking matters and consumer appliance use.
Consumer Union contact for engineering, test protocol and methodology
Provide information to BSH worldwide, US colleagues
Support other areas i.e. (Six Sigma projects support, Safety Reviews and Field Test support)
Your Profile
Bachelor's degree in Consumer Science field preferred.(teaching, extension, foods)
Institutional food preparation experience.
Less than 10% travel is required, some of that may be international.
Some test areas are not climate conditioned; they can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
Work with high voltage (240V) and combustible gas (natural and LP) equipment.
Cooking Appliances are large and need to be moved before, during and after test; duties may require lifting of up to 50lbs.
Computer literate with experience in MS Office applications required.
Experience with National Instruments Lab view Data Acquisition systems
Set-up and use of lab tools (multi-meters, temperature probes, data loggers, etc.)
Analytical approach to appliance and food testing.
Excellent food instincts.
Good communication.
Very good organizational skills.
Food testing techniques and equipment.
Appliance sales and distribution operations.
Show demonstrations.
Ability to handle confidential information relating to strengths and weaknesses of product performance, product development plans and schedules, and employee compensation.
Use of wide ranging laboratory instruments; Micrometers, temperature recorders, stop watches, gas meters, power regulators.
Lab View Data Acquisition System / other Data Acquisition Systems
General and special purpose performance testing equipment (i.e.: PLCs, Digital Camera, Colorimeter and Reflectometer)
