User Experience Designer (Creative Design)

Garmin seeks a full-time User Experience / Visual Design Engineer for our office in Yarmouth, Maine. Our Yarmouth location focuses on the inReach satellite communication device that provides users online mapping, satellite text messaging and SOS communication. A Garmin User Experience Designer has real world experience creating product solutions, designs, prototypes, icons, images, and other digital artwork based on user centered design principles for web sites, applications, and services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • May perform as a design lead who guides design direction for a small project or sub project
  • Performs user interviews and observational research and interprets research data to create viable solutions
  • Creates interactive prototypes and conducts user tests to improve and validate a design
  • Remains current on user research methods and conducts effective research for generating and improving designs
  • Maintain an exceptional eye for detail and deep appreciation for finding simple design representation for complex data
  • Work with partners and potential partners to define the user experience
  • Demonstrates full use of design standards and procedures in performance of essential functions
  • Demonstrates understanding of creating responsive web pages
  • Responsible for maintaining corporate branding and consistent look for all owned products
  • Stay abreast with new prototyping, presentation or computer graphics techniques and software
  • Serve as a mentor to less experienced User Experience Designers (User Experience Designer 1)
  • Exhibits the ability to produce solid design solutions without assistance from others
  • Demonstrates good communication skills when presenting ideas to various disciplines or customers
  • Apply Garmin's Mission Statement and Quality Policy and enthusiastically exhibits a desire to see Garmin succeed
  • Work collaboratively and communicate professionally with software engineering, user experience designers, and other Garmin associates to achieve departmental and company objectives/goals
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency, commitment and focus on the right priorities in developing solutions in a timely fashion

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Visual Design or a degree with an equivalent curriculum that teaches user centered design principles AND a minimum of 2 years work experience performing a role substantially similar to the essential functions of this job description OR a minimum of 1 year experience performing the essential functions of Garmin's User Experience Designer 1 role
  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule) with the ability to effectively apply learned knowledge
  • Demonstrates proficiency and knowledge of design tools
  • Demonstrates excellent presentation, communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrates understanding and knowledge of good user interface design (consistency, simplicity, usability)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in graphics production, graphics editing technology, and motion graphics.
  • Desired software skills: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe XD or Sketch, Adobe Illustrator, Invision, Adobe After Effects
  • SEO Techniques
  • Experience with Google Analytics
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
