Ophthalmic Assistant II - Ophthalmology (Finance)

UTHealth Houston Ophthalmology is hiring for an Ophthalmic Assistant II to join their team of professionals. The OA II will be responsible for ophthalmic workups, patient history, answering patient messages, and more. The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant II assists physicians by providing patient care by preparing patients for examination and diagnostic testing. This position is primarily in our Ophthalmic procedure/surgery area. Knowledge of ocular procedures helpful but not required.

Position Summary:

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant II assists physicians by providing patient care by preparing patients for examination and diagnostic testing.

Position Key Accountabilities:

Essential Functions

  • Prepares patients for physician's exam. Performs testing based on patient needs and physician preference. Obtains chief complaint, medical/surgical/family history, current medications, and adverse drug reactions. Checks visual acuity, refraction, intraocular pressure as well as other components of the ophthalmic exam.
  • Assists in with prescription refills, prior authorizations, patient questions/calls. Able to perform basic diagnostic testing (visual field, fundus photography). Can teach insertion and removal of contact lenses. Assists Ophthalmologist with surgical procedures as necessary.
  • Responsible for preparing exam rooms for patients. Maintains instruments, equipment and clinic supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Has ability to complete tasks in this competency effectively.
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of basic office practices, and customer service concepts
  • COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant preferred
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation required

Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Minimum Experience:
2 years required May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement. Completion of an accredited Ophthalmic Assistant/Technician program in Ophthalmology may substitute for the experience requirement. Graduates of an approved program must obtain COA certification by one year anniversary date required
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
