Sr. Underwriter, Accident & Health (Finance)



Job Summary:

This role is responsible for full cycle underwriting of Accident & Health (A&H) products, including both new business and renewals. The role will work with distribution partners across the U.S.  The underwriter will work closely with internal teams and external partners to drive profitable growth, maintain underwriting discipline, and deliver high-quality service to brokers and clients.

Job Responsibilities:

Underwriting & Risk Management

●       Underwrite new and renewal A&H business within assigned authority levels.

●       Ensure renewals are initiated 90 days prior to anniversary dates.

●       Operate within governance frameworks and underwriting standards; escalate where appropriate.

●       Maintain accurate case documentation, quoting activity, and rationale.

●       Analyze loss experience and recommend corrective actions for accounts with adverse performance.

●       Coordinate issuance, endorsements, and policy servicing with internal operations.

Portfolio & Performance Management

●       Track and manage performance against underwriting goals (e.g., premium, loss ratio, retention).

●       Provide regular updates on quoting activity and registration volumes

Distribution & Market Engagement

●       Develop and maintain strong broker relationships to drive high-quality submissions and strategic opportunities.

●       Support underwriting across multiple distribution channels, including brokers, Wholesalers, and strategic partners.

●       Participate in client meetings, pitch presentations, and market-facing initiatives.

Leadership & Culture

●       Contribute to team goals.

●       Uphold a culture of accountability, ethics, and continuous improvement.

●       Fill in or flex across unit to support key growth and operational objectives.

Compensation:

The below annualized base pay range is based on analysis of similar positions in the market. The actual base pay for the position may be above or below the listed range and determined by a number of considerations, including but not limited to complexity, location, and scope of the role, along with experience, skills, education, training, and other conditions of employment. Base salary represents one component of Allied World's comprehensive total reward package, which may also include annual incentive compensation rewards.

Salary range:  $110,000 – 125,000

●       6-8 years of underwriting experience in Accident & Health insurance or reinsurance.

●       Familiarity with core A&H products including Business Travel Accident, Out-of-Country Medical, Study Abroad, Group Travel, Special Risk and Occupational Accident.

●       Proven ability to assess, price, and manage risk while balancing profitability and market competitiveness.

●       Working knowledge of key concepts: Credibility, IBNR, Medical Inflation, Earned vs. Written Premium, and Pure Claim Rates.

●       Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and negotiation skills.

●       Demonstrated initiative, critical thinking, and sound decision-making skills.

●       Proven accountability and commitment to high ethical standards.

●       Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, growth-oriented environment.

●       Experience with modern underwriting platforms and tools; proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.

●       Familiarity with analytics dashboards, and workflow/collaboration tools (e.g., Teams, SharePoint) is required.

●       Bachelor's degree required; industry certifications are a plus.

●       Willingness to travel as needed to accomplish divisional goals.
