Counsel - Privacy & Data Protection

Role Summary:

This role will provide legal services and advice, including regulatory and transaction counsel for privacy and data use to clients across the enterprise, including fellow legal teams, data analytics professionals and data scientists, business teams and security professionals. Working in partnership with Cigna's Privacy Compliance Office, the privacy law team has a lead role in shaping Cigna's privacy and data sharing practices.

The qualified candidate must be able to collaborate well with team members and colleagues across Cigna Legal, and must possess an ability to develop a detailed understanding of complex business operations and interdependencies in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of applicable privacy and security laws (including, but not limited to HIPAA privacy and security rules, TCPA, state privacy and data breach laws, GLBA, and consumer state privacy laws), contract negotiation experience and the ability to provide timely, practical guidance while effectively managing multiple competing priorities are required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Interpret and advice on privacy and protection law and contractual requirements to a wide variety of business initiatives.
  • Stay current on guidance and litigation trends related to applicable law as it may impact compliance or our business strategy and goals.
  • Provide day to day legal counseling related to data use and protection on strategic, operational and transactional matters.
  • Negotiate and handle a data and security related contracts and contract provisions consistent with the company's strategy and goals.
  • Collaborate and provide support to other legal team members as needed to manage complex legal matters.
  • Counsel entities in various privacy roles including Covered Entities, Business Associates, Hybrid Entities, Data Controllers, Data processors, and others.
  • Provide legal support to privacy compliance team, including the incident response team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • J.D. required from an accredited law school/Bar membership required.
  • Must be licensed to practice law.
  • This is a junior - mid level role, a minimum of 4+ years privacy and data protection experience, preferably in the health care law department of a reputable law firm with experience in health care business contracting and advising.
  • Must use sound judgment to make decisions, communicate effectively verbally and in writing, and work well with others in a diverse team environment to resolve complex issues.
  • Must possess strong analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Must be organized to professionally handle multiple issues and projects in a fast-paced, demanding work environment.
  • Technical expertise/knowledge in analytics, digital, technology sector, a plus
  • Hybrid work is preferred and remote will be considered; location is flexible.

If you will be working at home occasionally or permanently, the internet connection must be obtained through a cable broadband or fiber optic internet service provider with speeds of at least 10Mbps download/5Mbps upload.

For this position, we anticipate offering an annual salary of 132,700 - 221,100 USD / yearly, depending on relevant factors, including experience and geographic location.

This role is also anticipated to be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan.
