Eye and Tissue Recovery Team Leader (Healthcare)
Manage the recovery team and all recovery related activities at the recovery location of the donation. Recover musculoskeletal, ocular, cardiovascular, skin and other tissue as required. Responsible for suitability determination of donor, aseptic surgical tissue procurements, packaging at recovery and shipping post-recovery (if applicable). Complete donor charts following recovery.
Blood Bourne Pathogen Classification: Class I
• Required tasks routinely involve a potential for exposure to mucous membranes or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues. Use of appropriate measures is required for every employee in this job classification.
• The hepatitis B vaccination series or titer is available at no cost to all Unyts Class I and Class II employees
• Documentation of receiving the vaccination or a declination to be vaccinated is required within 10 days of initial job assignment or prior to first exposure, whichever comes first.
Education Requirements:
High school diploma required.
Associates degree or higher in Life Sciences or related field desired.
Experience:
Experience in:
Healthcare/medical field, or
one year of hospital experience in a clinical area, or
one year eye banking experience, or
one year tissue banking experience
Managerial or supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Anatomy and physiology required.
Medical terminology and/or familiarity with medical diagnosis, medical record review strongly preferred.
Excellent interpersonal skills, written and verbal communication skills required, including communicating with diverse individuals.
Must be able to supervise, delegate, coach and motivate staff in a collaborative team environment.
Must be adaptable and flexible to change with the ability to think critically in solving problems with a continuous focus on customer service.
Proficiency in data entry required.
Must be detail oriented, and have the ability to remain accurate while under pressure.
Must be results oriented, and highly organized with the ability to think logically, manage time effectively, prioritize and multi-task.
Must be able to remain professional in making decisions and handling confidential information.
Must have patience and maintain focus through interruptions and emotional stress.
Must be self-motivated and reliable.
Must have a valid NYS Drivers license and reliable transportation.
Travel required.
On-call required.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Manage the recovery team and all recovery related activities at the recovery location of the donation.
2. Manage communications with hospital staff, medical examiners, county coroner's, funeral directors, and all other internal/external entities as they pertain to case related activities in order to address and resolve any issues, concerns, or questions identified.
3. Participate as a Team Lead member of the eye and tissue recovery team on an on-call basis by responding to communications in order to facilitate the recovery of eye and tissue donations in a timely manner.
4. Oversee and perform tissue and eye recovery activities from recovery and packaging through shipping.
5. Perform a review of all available donor records (Med/Soc., Medical chart, etc.) and a physical assessment of the donor in order to determine the suitability of the donor for recovery.
6. Collect all required/necessary data concerning consented donors from all sources available (medical records, nursing staff, physicians, etc.), and complete all case related paperwork.
7. Enter all necessary information into the donor electronic medical record system.
8. Ensure compliance with AATB, EBAA, State, Federal, and UNYTS standards for eye and tissue recovery.
9. Ensure proper reconstruction of the donor following eye and tissue recovery.
10. Obtain quality blood samples for serological testing.
11. Report all case irregularities to the Tissue Bank Manager or Vice President for Eye & Tissue Services.
12. Make a proactive effort to stay informed and up-to-date regarding changes in the field.
13. Maintain/obtain any necessary certifications required for the position and attend all monthly meetings/trainings.
