Position Summary
The Lead Support Pharmacy Technician position is an advanced practice position intended for a motivated and experienced technician capable of working in multiple areas of an acute care hospital pharmacy, filling in during vacations or times of increased workload or working independently on special projects. The Lead Support Pharmacy Technician works cooperatively with pharmacy staff to provide safe, accurate and timely delivery of medications to patients. Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, the Lead Support Pharmacy Technician effectively processes new orders, accesses appropriate patient information in the electronic health record (EHR) if needed, issues drug doses to nurses, fills medication cassettes, fills automated dispensing cabinets (ADC) and/or drug delivery bins, packages, and prepares patient doses and maintains drug inventories. The Lead Support Pharmacy Technician effectively communicates with co-workers, other healthcare professionals, and patients.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Successfully maintains competency in Technician Skill Certifications in multiple areas of the department to continually be aware of new and updated Pharmacy practices.
Trains new staff/students in areas of his/her competency to promote growth and development opportunities within the Pharmacy Department.
In collaboration with the Pharmacist and/or Pharmacy Technician Coordinator, assists staff to ensure established workload timelines are met, identifies and solves operational problems, and completes special projects as assigned.
Regularly works in multiple areas and shifts of the department to help support the staffing needs of the Pharmacy Department.
Able to independently use a computer and/or automation resources in an efficient and timely manner as relevant to their practice area and ensures accurate billing.
Independently maximizes inventory turnover, prevents stock-outs, and minimizes drug wastage to optimize financial performance of the Pharmacy Department.
Complies with the laws governing the storage and maintenance for all drugs, including Schedules II-V to ensure the integrity of the Pharmacy Department.
Complies with California Board of Pharmacy sterile compounding standards when preparing intravenous products, to establish consistent, accurate, and timely delivery.
Under the supervision of a pharmacist, ensures accurate preparation, labeling, and timely delivery of medications as prescribed.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications/Work Experience:
Completion of a recognized pharmacy technician training program and more than 2 years' experience in an acute care hospital.
Education/Licensure/Certification:
Current licensure as a pharmacy technician in the State of California.
