Primary Role

Responsible for supporting the Company health and safety (H&S) program through planning, organizing, providing training and implementing programs to prevent, eliminate or minimize occupational injuries and illness and precursor exposures, and to ensure compliance with applicable Company Policies and Procedures as well as Federal.

Key Accountabilities

  • Conduct safety audits and inspections to identify H&S hazards and deficiencies or areas of regulatory non-compliance.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret data to measure the effectiveness of existing programs.
  • Develop and implement H&S programs based on review of analytical safety performance data incorporating new technologies.
  • Conduct workplace analysis for chemical, physical, biological and ergonomic exposures, providing professional recommendations for the implementation of procedures, work practices, purchase of tools, materials and equipment that will reduce workplace exposures that can lead to illness or injury.
  • Develop H&S training strategy and create and implement (including delivery of) educational training programs and activities that improve the safety process within the company and ensures compliance with federal state and local regulations.
  • Provide assistance and expertise in accident/claim investigation and claims management, when required, and make recommendations to prevent reoccurrences.
  • Assist in the tracking and maintenance of health and safety performance statistics (leading and lagging indicators), maintain required injury and illness logs, generate and deliver management reports and presentations.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Knowledge Occupational Health and Safety including best practices and emerging trends.
  • Knowledge of safety systems and their implementation in plant and construction environments.
  • Knowledge of Company policies and procedures relating to Health and Safety.
  • Knowledge of regulations applicable to Health and Safety including OSHA process safety management (PSM) and EPA risk management plan (RMP) regulations.
  • Knowledge of Utility operations (i.e., water, electric, gas/ regulated utility) Standards and Practices preferred.

Experience/Education

  • Minimum of five (5) years applicable health and safety experience.
  • Safety experience in construction and utility operations a plus.
  • Bachelors level degree required in health and safety or related field.

Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and could include a work environment where possible exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and chemicals exists.
  • The employee occasionally works at elevation, in confined spaces, in a construction environment and in atmospheres with potential for chemical, physical or biological exposures.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required, including, but not limited to, respirators, hearing protection, eye and face protection and specialty clothing.
  • Use of certain PPE may require medical clearance and is considered a job requirement.
  • In addition to American Water's pre-employment screenings, this position requires the ability to pass a Department of Defense background check for access to the military installation.

Travel Requirements

  • Must possess a valid state (of residence) driver's license and successfully pass a motor vehicle report.
  • This position will require travel, primarily day trips, to various facilities and locations, but up to 20% overnight travel may be required.
