Optical & Electrical Engineering Intern

Job Summary:
The intern will be part of our Essential Field Instruments (EFI) team and support our customers by providing them optical/electrical measurements on optical test instruments. This will require work with optical connectors, splices, fiber optic cord sets, etc. This position will provide hands-on experience in operating various instruments including light sources, power meters, and other lab equipment. The individual must have good communication skills to interact with both technical and non-technical personnel.

We are looking for a student who will be available to work full-time during Summer break (June - August). The selected candidates will support our team of engineers in testing and evaluating optical components and subsystems for use in telecommunications systems. This involves performing measurements on components and subsystems using various test equipment, as well as developing software tools and automated measurement systems.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Job Responsibilities:

• Performing tests on optical components and subsystems.  
• Developing and maintaining automated test systems.  
• Designing and building test fixtures and equipment.  
• Writing scripts for data acquisition and analysis.  
• Interacting with suppliers and customers to resolve issues and provide information.  
• Documenting results and preparing reports.  
• Troubleshooting problems with equipment or component failures.  

Analyzing data and making recommendations based on statistical methods.  
 

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

Job Qualifications: 

• Pursuing BS degree in electrical engineering, optical engineering, applied optics, or related field.  
• Background in optics and photonics.  
• Good understanding of basic electronics concepts such as voltage, current, resistors, capacitors, etc.  
• Experience with programming languages like Python, C++, or MATLAB.  
• Ability to analyze data and make conclusions based on statistical methods.  
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.  
• Detail-oriented approach to problem solving.  
• Self-motivated to learn new skills and techniques.  
• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
