Coordinator, Fitness & Sports Programs (Finance)



Department: Campus Recreation & Wellness Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
Description:

The Coordinator, Fitness and Sports Programs is responsible for creating and supervising all aspects of fitness and sports programs for the university community. This position hires, trains, schedules, and evaluates part-time fitness employees and student staff. The coordinator is responsible for the successful execution of personal training, group exercise classes, Intramural tournament offerings, and wellness promotions and programming for a diverse student, faculty/staff, and community member base. Additional responsibilities include advising club sports (3), conducting fitness facility inspections, payroll processing, maintenance of fitness equipment, and data reporting.

Duties:
  • Program Development: Develops, coordinates and schedules fitness and sport programs relevant to a varied population. Ensures Group Fitness Schedule is complete prior to each semester with proper time to promote the schedule. Supports the growth and development of Club Sports.
  • Staff Management and Supervision: Recruits, hires, trains, schedules and evaluates Fitness Instructors, Personal Trainers and Sports Managers. Approves time and labor payroll for employees. Documents employee certifications. Addresses performance problems directly, fairly, and timely. Mentors and advises club sport leaders.
  • Program Management: Provides support to special events or tournaments and teaches fitness classes as needed to ensure seamless operations of programs. Assigns Personal Training clients efficiently. Works early mornings, evenings, or weekends as needed or required.
  • Program Marketing and Communications: Develops marketing campaigns in conjunction with marketing staff. Communicates class information and/or changes and responds to client and employee needs in a timely manner. Follows all departmental guidelines to actively promote programs and submit marketing requests.
  • Program Assessment: Develops program assessments and tracks participation rates. Reports and uses documentation to improve programs and services and develop future goals. Uses data driven methods to determine Group Fitness schedule and other programming. Contributes to departmental reports.
  • Fiscal Responsibilities: Maintains fiscal accountability for all program area staff labor expenses. Actively works to meet or exceed annual revenue projections, identifying new sources of revenue as possible. Provides budget projections annually. Develops creative solutions to manage budget.
  • Staff Training: Conducts regular staff trainings to include; emergency response protocols, conflict resolution, policy and procedure review, and training opportunities for fitness staff to maintain or obtain certifications/CEU's.
  • Collaboration: Works collaboratively with UHCL and non-UHCL partners on programming that supports university initiatives and promotes health and wellbeing. Develops collaborative relationships to contribute to the facilitation, promotion and growth of recreational programs. Serves on university, divisional and departmental committees and performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  1. Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management or a related field.
  2. Minimum one year of related experience.
  3. Industry Certification (ACSM, ACE, AFAA, NSCA, NASM etc.) or the ability to obtain at least one certification in the first six months of employment.
  4. American Red Cross (or equivalent) First Aid, CPR & AED certification.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Management or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in collegiate recreation.
  • American Red Cross First Aid, CPR & AED Instructor Certification.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge of industry standards in regards to conducting group exercise, personal training, and fitness assessments.
  • Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures, and specific software
  • Knowledge of and skilled in various computer software needed to perform duties (Microsoft Office Suite, Innosoft Fusion).
  • Skilled in developing sport and special event programming related to fitness and sports.
  • Skilled in teaching group fitness and/or conducting personal training.
  • Ability to identify and implement risk management policies in Campus Recreation Programs.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and accurately verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to identify the developmental needs of others and coach, mentor, instruct, etc.
