Principal Engineer - Building Energy Efficiency (Engineering)



General Summary

GTI Energy, the nation's leading research and development and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an Engineer in our Building Energy Efficiency area within the Energy Delivery and Utilization Group. The qualified candidate will perform RD&D functions, under the supervision of senior technical staff, focused on emerging energy efficient and low emission technologies for the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R), water heating, demand response, and grid-interactive/other advanced building and process controls. This work consists of performance evaluations of emerging technologies in laboratory settings, developing new technologies, designing experimental test programs, data analysis, and technical reviews. The work will require interacting and collaborating with utilities, manufacturers, professional societies, trade groups, government agencies, universities, and national laboratories.

Work Location

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday.

Primary Responsibilities
  •  Implement experimental programs based on an understanding of current research and industry standards/test methods (ANSI, ASHRAE, etc.).
  • Design and build mechanical and electrical systems such as hydronic heating and cooling loops, HVAC ductwork, combustion systems, and electrical distribution panels.
  • Understand and develop mechanical, plumbing, and electrical drawings, software flow diagrams, standard operating procedures for testing equipment, and job safety analyses.
  • Execute experimental heating, cooling, power generation, and renewable energy investigations.
  • Analyze data and prepare test reports for internal and external use.
  • Specify, install, calibrate instrumentation, and program data acquisition systems.
  • Track and maintain project budgets at overall and task levels.
  • Publish in peer-reviewed conferences and journals.
  • Expected to support proposal and idea development.
  • Potential for travel for industry events, field site visits, or pilot implementations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • The candidate should possess a strong background or direct experience in system design, experimental design, hands-on experience, instrumentation, data acquisition, and analytical/numerical modeling.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) and strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership are required.
  • The ability to develop and/or maintain strong relationships through active participation in building industry organizations and events is required.
  • The qualified candidate is preferred to have a proven publication/patent record.
  • Your past professional experience in these areas is highly valued, as are your personal abilities and willingness to learn. All candidates with the appropriate skill sets will be considered.

 

Education and Experience
  • You must have earned an M.S (Ph.D. is preferred but not required) in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical, Energy Systems, or related Engineering discipline; Relevant Industry Certifications are a plus (Licensed Professional Engineer, LEED AP, CEM, etc.)
  • A minimum of 3 years of laboratory research and development experience (including academic, research fellow, and/or industry) is preferred, especially in the field of HVAC&R and energy systems.
