General Biologist III (Biotech)

Summary:

The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey's Eastern Ecological Science Center, Freshwater Ecology Team (EESC-FET) is to excel in aquatic and natural resource science, providing the information, scientific understanding and technologies needed to support the sound management and conservation of the nation's biological resources.

The focus of EESC-FET's mission and vision for the future is to continue its dynamic international, national, and regional leadership in aquatic, landscape, and genetics research by generating, interpreting, evaluating, and transmitting the scientific information needed to better address the pressing problems of managing our nation's biological resources, especially those under the stewardship of the Department of the

Interior, and other Federal and non-Federal partners. The primary means of gathering this information is through the use of scientific methods applied to monitoring resources and conducting experiments.

The EESC-FET is currently conducting research designed to analyze status and trends in key biological response variables, predict stream fish habitat and biological conditions, as well species distribution modeling.

Responsibilities:

Akima is hiring a General Biologist III to assist EESC-FET with support, collection and management of geospatial and biological data, to assist in tabulation and analysis of data, and to assist in developing automated scripts in R Statistical Software, GIS and Python platforms. to accomplish the following tasks:

  • Assist researchers by collection and tabulation of existing geospatial and biological data.
  • Use spreadsheets, and database programs (Excel, Access) to prepare data files for use by Principal Investigators in statistical analysis.
  • Assist Principal Investigators in development of land use, land cover, and watershed summaries by developing automated scripts in R Statistical Software, GIS and Python platforms.
  • Assist Principal Investigators in writing reports that detail results and conclusions by formatting tables and graphics on request and as directed.
  • Travel will be necessary, including possible overnight stays, to present findings to stakeholders within the mid-Atlantic region and potentially outside this region at scientific meetings.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Successful completion of a M.S. degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or Geography including coursework in GIS or a bachelor's degree plus at least 2 years experience working in freshwater ecosystems with emphasis on land use and climate effects on fish and benthic macroinvertebrate communities (experience with life history, functional traits preferred).
  • Experience using Excel, Access, Python, R, and ArcGIS (version 10.2 or later) software to tabulate, organize, summarize, and map data is required.  Experience with R and Python scripting for batch processing of large data is desired.  Experience using metadata creation and editing tools is highly desired.
  • Experience in statistical modeling related to status and trends (time series) preferred, but not mandatory.
  • Ability to pass federal background investigation with DOI is required.
  • Must have a valid drivers license.
