Director, Workspace Engineering (Architecture)



The Director, Workspace Engineering is a strategic visionary position within the Digital Workspace Services organization. The major function for this position is to develop and drive a FINRA enterprise-wide, leading-edge strategy, implementation, and support within the digital workspace area. Direct supervision of the FINRA workstation (Windows, Mac & Virtual) Engineering and Operations functions. Provide leadership and vision to a team of engineers in the delivery of enterprise-scale solutions focusing on Desktop Engineering and Citrix Engineering practices. Collaborate with peers in partner organizations, including Directory, Messaging and Collaboration Services, Security, Network, Platform Engineering, QA, and Operations to provide world-class solutions focused on enabling productivity for end-users in the new hybrid work environment. This role will have ownership and oversite of all strategic projects, initiatives, and decisions for the desktop platform.

Essential Job Functions:

Provides team leadership and management

  • Leads, directs, and provides a highly innovative strategic vision for the Workspace Engineering team.
  • Responsible for staff performance management and continuous skills development for up to 2 managers and their teams to continuously upskill the Desktop Engineering and Citrix Engineering staff to ensure that they consistently meet the everchanging workspace user needs.
  • Develop and maintain a highly collaborative working relationship with the end user community, FINRA leaders, and fellow technology teams (e.g., Business Applications, Security & Network).

Leads FINRA's Workspace Engineering and operations practices

  • Own and drive the research, design, and implementation of the new workspace services/tools and overall strategy at an enterprise level.
  • Manages the priorities and backlog as continuous transformation is to be expected.
  • Provides hands-on engineering and operations management direction and experience with optimizing, integrating, and unifying on a wide swath of workspace technologies including:
    • Build Engineering and automation (Windows and Apple) for both physical and virtual desktops
    • Endpoint & Policy Management Systems (MECM/Intune, JAMF) and Software Packaging Practices
    • Digital Experience Management (DEM) solutions such as Splunk dashboards, Aternity and/or Systrack or comparable technology
    • Persona Management solutions such as Ivanti Appsense or comparable solutions
    • Citrix Virtual Desktops (Azure, Citrix Cloud services, VDI/DaaS)
    • Configuration Management of Office 365 (includes Outlook and Teams), Browsers and other collaboration and related software solutions
    • Self-help tools and services
    • Home office architecture and support
  • Applies the appropriate DevOps configure, build, test, deployment and operate tools and practices to automate, as well as constantly improve resiliency, compliance, and price performance. Leverages AI within the desktop environment to constantly improve the user experience.
  • Lead and manage multiple agile development projects including planning, delivery, administration, and budgeting
  • Provide vision and define roadmap for in-scope platforms while working in close partnership with other peer organizations including hardware standards, build engineering (Windows and Apple), VDI/DaaS, end point & policy management systems (MECM/Intune, JAMF), data analytics/Splunk dashboards, M365 Configuration management, browser management, software packaging, persona management, Virtual Desktops (Azure, Citrix Cloud services), etc.
  • Experience creating a superior user experience through self-help tools, automation as well as defending the balance of usability with the necessary security baseline.
  • Accountable for career planning and training of staff within the team with the goal of continual technical and personal growth. Hire, coach, mentor and develop staff.
  • Accountable for managing vendor relationships and ensuring vendor commitments are met within agreed budget and schedule and that delivered product or service meets business, operational, compliance and other needs
  • Lead and drive collaboration on cross-organization and cross-product initiatives. 
  • Drive and effectively manage multiple projects with accountability for outcomes, budget, schedule, resources, quality, risks and internal and external dependencies
  • Accountable for building high performing, appropriately staffed, self-organizing agile development teams that deliver measurable business value rapidly with high-quality products
  • Accountable for assessment of software engineering practices and driving continuous improvement in engineering practices, operational efficiency, time to value and product quality
  • Partner with leaders and drive collaboration across organizational boundaries, communicating effectively with people up and down the org chart in both business and technology 
  • Accountable for compliance of practices and products with all security, privacy, audit and other requirements and FINRA standards
  • Ensure appropriate level of operational reliability and performance across the portfolio

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related discipline preferred
  • At least seven (7) years of experience managing teams, programs and projects including staff management, in the delivery of engineering solutions in an enterprise environment
  • Demonstrated experience in delivery of cloud-first solutions, particularly within the Microsoft cloud ecosystem
  • Knowledge and experience in business, technology and management principles involved in strategic planning, organizational change management, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership. techniques, and coordination of people and resources
  • Knowledge of industry leading technology trends, best practices and methods including agile software development and iterative delivery and cloud computing
  • Demonstrated success driving and contributing to strategic decisions for an organization, identifying investment tradeoffs, and delivering high quality solutions to customer needs
  • Outstanding communication, organization, time management, interpersonal and management skills
  • Outstanding problem identification, analysis and solving skills
  • Proven change agent who can improve and grow the capability of an organization
  • Experience managing staff comprised of both employees and contractors

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily remote with work performed in an office environment as needed/required.
