Business Insider editorial fellow, data (SUMMER/FALL) (Creative Design)

Data provides a powerful tool to help understand our complicated world. From charts to maps to polls to rankings to analysis, data-driven stories inform our readers about emerging economic and social trends, demographics, and the latest in quantitative social science research. For this role, we are specifically looking for an early-career data reporter interested in jobs, compensation, and the economy.

We're looking for someone who brings together a strong quantitative background with journalistic talent to go deep into the numbers that help explain where we are and where we're going. You'll spend your time doing meaningful work: Researching, writing, pitching and producing data-driven features that will draw a wide audience.

The Insider Fellowship Program is for early career journalists who want to spend six months learning from a newsroom full of passionate, dedicated journalists. Fellows are assigned to teams and become experts in digital storytelling. For more information on the Insider Fellowship Program, see here.

All our editorial fellows should have:
  • A journalism background and experience at a digital publication
  • A passion for digital storytelling and voracious reading habits
  • Familiarity with digital and social media
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team
  • Proofreading and copyediting skills

Additionally, for this role , we're looking for someone who:
  • Has a strong mathematical, statistical, or other quantitative background and feels comfortable analyzing and writing about data
  • Has extensive experience using Microsoft Excel and/or statistical software
  • Is familiar with the theory and practice of data visualization
  • Has a sense for how to use data to complement other journalists' efforts in the newsroom: How can we improve a story with data?
  • Has strong and proven headline-writing skills
  • Has a deep interest in the role of work and economics in American life
  • Is capable of peeling stories out of technical reports and making them lucid to a lay audience
  • Is comfortable working on both long-form and quick-hit pieces

This is an hourly paid fellowship. Fellows are encouraged to work 40 hours a week, and fellowships run for six months. Start date for this position will be in July/August.
