Scientist I, Pharmacology and Biomarkers (Agriculture)



Job Description Summary:

The Scientist I, Pharmacology and Biomarkers is responsible for planning and performing scientific experiments that contribute to PTC's research and drug discovery activities. The incumbent works cross-functionally with internal departments, and external resources as appropriate, as part of PTC's discovery science project teams.

The Scientist I, Pharmacology and Biomarkers is responsible for planning and performing scientific experiments that contribute to PTC's research and drug discovery activities. The incumbent works cross-functionally with internal departments, and external resources as appropriate, as part of PTC's discovery science project teams.

The Scientist I, Pharmacology and Biomarkers supports adherence to relevant regulatory requirements and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as appropriate. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary duties/responsibilities:

  • With guidance from the advisor plans, initiates, directs and executes scientific research and experiments and interprets and communicates results as part of multi-disciplinary team(s). This includes performing analyses of primary research literature.
  • Presents findings internally to cross-functional teams.
  • May Participate in the development and writing of patent applications and scientific publications
  • Maintains a detailed laboratory notebook.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned
  • Interviews and contributes to the evaluation of future candidates.
  • May provide scientific advice to research leadership on projects and areas of expertise.
  • Abides by all safety requirements and IACUC guidelines
    • Abides by all safety requirements.
    • Maintains accurate records
    • Multi staining fluorescent immunohistochemistry
    • Process both fixed and frozen tissues
    • Paraffin embedding and processing
    • Operates all instruments e.g. Leica Cryostat/ equipment according to accepted written procedures and recognizes and identifies instrument/ equipment problems.
  • Contributes to general lab needs such as:
    • Equipment maintenance.
    • Capital equipment purchases.
    • Troubleshoot

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Initiate, troubleshoot and establish new validated IHC and IF assay
  • Qualify assays to demonstrate selectivity, specificity, robustness
  • Take part in in vivo experiments with rodent models
  • Take part in analyses of data obtained from in vitro and other biomarker assays
  • Present data to team members and management

* Minimum level of education and years of relevant work experience.

  • PhD in a scientific discipline preferably Neuroscience, Biochemistry, pharmacology or Toxicology with 1-2 years' post-doctoral or Industry experience OR Master's degree with 4-6 years' experience in similar discipline.

* Special knowledge or skills needed and/or licenses or certificates required.

  • Demonstrate ability to work on complex problems to produce experimental data across one or more projects.
  • Exercises independent judgement within defined procedures and practices.
  • Demonstrates technical proficiency, collaboration with others within a fast-paced, matrixed, team environment consisting of internal and external team members.
  • Possesses detailed and expert knowledge of scientific principles and concepts.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office preferably MS Excel and MS PowerPoint or similar
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and skills.
  • Analytical thinker with excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the strategic alignment of his/her work with corporate goal(s) and demonstrates the ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Excellent planning, organization and time management skills including the ability to support and prioritize multiple projects.

*Special knowledge or skills and/or licenses or certificates preferred.

  • Expertise in dissection and isolation of rodent ocular and brain tissues preferred but not required

*Physical requirements (only note if the job requires physical capacity beyond general office work)

Laboratory based position. Must be able to drive to the animal facility and work with rodents.

Some weekend and/or night work may be necessary
