Summary:

The Director, Mechanical Engineering leads an internal engineering team which provides support to Dexcom's external manufacturers. The External Manufacturing Engineering team collaborates with contract manufacturers and suppliers in order to improve quality, productivity and yield; identify improvement and cost-saving opportunities; and drive process improvements at contract manufacturers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build and lead the global External Manufacturing Engineering team. Cultivate a unified culture, vision and strategy for the External Manufacturing Engineering team.
  • Identify cost savings opportunities at contract manufacturers.
  • Sponsor process improvement projects between Dexcom and contract manufacturers.
  • Partner with Operations Engineering to set up contract manufacturers and suppliers for new product introduction and ramp-up.
  • Lead effort to ramp capacity of new products at contract manufacturers across the U.S., Mexico, Malaysia and other parts of the world, including setting up new equipment & tools.
  • Lead effort to resolve technical issues related to contract manufacturers.
  • Act as subject matter expert in two or more of the following technical areas: Injection molding, low pressure molding, assembly, automation, PCBAs, wires, metal processing.
  • Responsible for helping Contract Manufacturers meet yield, throughput and quality goals on Dexcom products.
  • Attract and develop talent. Guide and develop engineers in the organization.
  • Implement the appropriate level of engineering process, rigor, and cross functional review within the external manufacturing engineering team.
  • Develop budgets, schedules and performance requirements to align with corporate vision and goals.
  • Guide and drive external manufacturing engineering strategy implementation.
  • Responsible supplier development through validation (mechanical), DFM, NPI, Drawing reviews, tolerance stack, electronics assembly processes, operations packaging engineering, mechanical process development, and mechanical assembly fixture development.
  • Develops and maintains team knowledge and skills relevant to applicable technology standards.
  • Coordinates and communicates with Contract Manufactures and other functional leaders on external manufacturing roadmap, manufacturing technology transformation and engineering partnership opportunities.
  • Partner with Contract Manufactures and cross functional teams on business process improvements such as supplier quality, quality compliance, and R&D.
  • Responsible for ensuring that department is committed to and conforms to the company quality system procedures as documented.
  • Responsible for ensuring that department understands and complies with quality standards and requirements as documented.

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree with 15+ years of industry experience. Engineering degree preferred.
  • 9+ years of successful management experience in relevant industry.
  • Experiences in injection molding, assembly and automation strongly preferred.
  • Experiences in PCBAs, wires, metals, chemicals and packaging preferred.

Functional Description: Management

Directs and guides the activities of a mechanical systems and equipment design function. Manages and analyzes the testing and feasibility studies of mechanical products, instruments, subassemblies, and packaging for new and existing products. Directs the introduction of design changes to the manufacturing and drafting organizations. Evaluates final results of mechanical design and test to assure accomplishment of technical objectives. Ensures that proper documentation, such as test specifications and procedures, is provided to the appropriate functional area.

  • Viewed as a subject matter expert within specific area.
  • Reviews objectives to determine success of operation. Involved in developing, modifying and executing company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect.

  • Provides high-level guidance and support to employees and other managers.
  • Regularly interacts with executives and/or external parties on matters effecting the function.

  • Works on abstract issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of the company.
  • Participates in corporate development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for projects, programs, and people.
  • Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of functional or company operations.

Management:

  • Able to operate in complex global environment.
  • Manages the activities of a functional area and/or external service providers.
  • People management responsibilities include hiring / terminations, performance reviews, career development coaching and compensation decisions.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this area. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Language Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
