Lead Systems Engineer (Information Technology)



GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Lead System Engineer plays a critical role in executing day-to-day support and operations and setting the future direction of on-premises and cloud-based server compute, storage and related services and applications. The role leads and supports the build-out of our existing server and storage infrastructure and troubleshoots problems as they arise. The Lead prioritizes mission critical tasks and coordinates the expansion of our systems' capabilities to meet future business needs. The Engineer will assist in planning, designing, and executing strategic initiatives and operating a highly effective operations function. Within this scope of responsibility, the Lead will be responsible for developing project plans and related budgets and developing operational budgets.

KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING, AND/OR EDUCATION REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Computer Science, Engineering, Systems Management, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of recent experience in engineering, architecting and supporting an environment comprised of on-premise and cloud-based server compute and storage.
  • Experience serving as a team lead (operations and\or projects).
  • Experience in or knowledge of the following technology areas:
    • Windows operating systems
    • Storage area network technologies
    • Virtualization technology (VWware)
    • Backup and recovery concepts and technologies
    • Server hardware installation, network cabling, racking, electrical
    • Designing, implementing, supporting, and managing Office365, Microsoft365 (365 Services), Azure, Exchange Online
    • Active Directory (including Azure Active Directory (AAD)) operations, group policy and AAD SSO integration
    • Data center facilities operations (UPS, backup generator, HVAC, physical access)
    • Networking standards and concepts (zones, DMZ, LAN\WAN\DNS\DHCP\remote access, cabling, understanding the OSI model and how to approach troubleshooting in the 7 layers, understanding layer 2 and layer 3 networking concepts)
    • Remote access services (Remote Desktop Gateway, Virtual Desktops)
    • Security controls such as network segmentation, MFA, eMail filters, endpoint anti-malware, endpoint detect and respond (EDR), etc
    • Scripting languages
    • IT Service management platforms (asset management, ticketing, system monitoring and alerting, systems management)
    • Migrating organizations to new technologies or services (new operating systems, endpoint controls, cloud services, etc)
    • Database technology such as Microsoft SQL server
    • Exposure to Linux-based systems and OS
    • Line of business and enterprise application system configuration and administration
    • Some knowledge of licensing (Microsoft)
  • Working experience with, but not limited to, the following process areas: incident management, problem management, change management, patching, lifecycle planning, asset management, configuration management, systems monitoring.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATES OR REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Network+, Security+, Cloud, ITIL, Microsoft Server, Microsoft Azure, certifications preferred but not required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

The Lead operates as part of the dynamic infrastructure team under the Director of Infrastructure and Cybersecurity.  The Lead has responsibility for the on-premises and cloud-based server compute and storage and related services, applications, and processes across the 11 companies that constitute High.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in setting a strategic vision and the long-term direction including the creation and maintenance of multi-year functional roadmaps.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Infrastructure and Cybersecurity, ensure alignment with High's strategic goals and the best possible use of IT resources.
  • Mentor and coach team members to develop & improve professional technical ability, soft skills, and effectiveness.
  • Provide input to the Director of Infrastructure and Cybersecurity, for team members during goal setting, midterm, and year-end review processes.
  • Oversee scheduling and work content of team members and contractors.
  • Challenge existing architectures, technology decisions, practices, and cost structures to drive optimized service levels, cost efficiency and service performance.
  • Collaborate with the Client Computing, Network, Cybersecurity, Enterprise Solutions, and Business Intelligence teams regarding server compute and storage related architectures and solutions.
  • Lead requirements gathering, design, implementation, and enhancement of server compute and storage related solutions to meet High's business objectives.
  • Ensure that the infrastructure evolves to meet High's continued exploitation of cloud-based services, including MS365 and other SaaS implementations.
  • Oversee server compute and storage related operations including monitoring and management related tools.
  • Ensure that new projects and operations meet cybersecurity requirements to mitigate overall corporate risk.
  • Oversee the proper and secure design, implementation and operations of technology in scope of the role.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key strategic business partners. Manage and initiate service and hardware vendor relationships which include vendor selection, contract negotiations and contract enforcement.
  • Define life-cycle management for server compute and storage related systems.
  • Serve as a point of escalation for team members' issues requiring a higher degree of expertise or direction to resolve and ensure timely resolution.
  • Regularly evaluate industry trends, changes, innovations, and maturity to recommend and plan the introduction of new technologies. Stay abreast of technological developments to provide business partners with best-in-class economics for necessary infrastructure.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standards, policies, procedures to ensure optimal daily operations are maintained.
  • Support the daily operation of the server compute and storage (on-premises and cloud-based).
  • Support day-to-day operations functions, including but not limited to:
    • Installing and upgrading hardware
    • Installing, patching and upgrading server operating systems
    • Establishing and deploying Windows Server images
    • Installing, updating, expanding storage area networks and backup pools
    • Implementing, configuring and supporting file sharing services (Windows File Shares, Azure Files and Blob storage, etc.)
    • Maintaining backup and recovery systems and ensuring backups occur successfully.
    • Monitoring performance of systems
    • Applying security patches and updates
    • Troubleshooting and performing root cause analysis
    • Writing custom scripts to increase automation and reduce the need for human intervention
    • Integrating on-premises and cloud-based servers and infrastructure
    • Tracking assets as they are deployed and report progress of deployments and upgrades
    • Creating and deploying Group Policy
    • Configuring Windows Domain Services (DNS, WINS, etc.)
  • Support the infrastructure to maintain uninterrupted services.
  • Provide backup support to the SAP Basis administrator for the on-premise SAP system operating systems and servers.
  • Support workflow, product rollouts, and schedules to meet SLA agreements with Business Units.
  • Make recommendations on hardware and software standards.
  • Support the resolution of coworkers' technology issues.
  • Cross train other System Engineering and IT team members.
  • Provide 24/7 emergency on-call response and support after hours on critical infrastructure outages. Sometimes work beyond 40 hours in week for support and project work.
  • Provide in person support of hardware, cabling, etc. in support of support and projects (hybrid work).
