Assistant Resident Engineer (Architecture)

Responsibilities

What you'll be challenged to do:

Assist in the management of the Construction Engineering and Inspection of NCDOT projects. This will consist of the management of assigned elements of a construction project to assure quality of the contractor's compliance with the plans and contract documents, manage project personnel staffing, project inspection, and contract administration under the direction of the Responsible Charge Engineer (Resident Engineer).

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Attends meetings as needed related to construction projects.
  • Report to the Resident Engineer
  • Must have the ability to lead and manage project(s).
  • Must know DOT Standard & Specifications, special provisions, project contract and how it relates to the DOT Construction Manual and have ability to train others.
  • Must be able to read and understand construction plans and interpret for project team.
  • Answers inquiries and from Resident Engineer and Division Construction Engineer. Must be a good communicator and able to resolve solutions in the field and with personnel.
  • Must obtain accurate measurements and report progress information and document on  Daily Report .
  • Have knowledge of electronic pay records, Sharepoint.
  • Collect and collaborate material certification from contractor
  • Complete pay estimates/applications and coordinating with contractor and DOT.
  • Familiar with project close outs.
  • Check materials for conformance with contract requirements before installation.
  • Points out problems to the contractor and project engineer, and keeps project engineer, Resident and Division Engineer informed of progress of project.
  • Must be able to follow and carry out specific instructions on an independent basis.
  • Makes field decisions and points out potential problems to the contractor and project engineer, and aids in keeping projects on schedule.
  • Proficient in technical writing. Can produce clear, legible, reports.
  • Understanding and conformance to existing QA/QC program.
  • Lead safety meetings on a regular basis.

 


Qualifications

What you bring to our firm:

  • Minimum of an Engineering Degree with two (2) years of directly attributable experience; Twenty (20) years of highway construction experience with no degree.
  • Ability to get Professional Engineering Licenses.
  • Must have basic math skills to compute quantities and costs.
  • Must be able to interpret and implement company mandated safety policies.
  • Must have an ability to operate a level and have an understanding of cut and fills and elevations for grades.
  • Mentoring and training other technicians.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Must understand construction surveying procedures and principles. 
  • Actively engages multiple perspectives when solving problems, seeks to learn from peers, and encourages reciprocal learning among team members.
  • Actively advocates for full inclusion in the workplace, fostering an environment that welcomes diversity and values equity for all employees, partners, clients, and the communities that TranSystems serves.

 

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Talk, hear, use hands and fingers to handle or feel, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 15 pounds.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work in indoor office environment 80% of the time.
  • Moderate noise level
  • Travel via automobile as needed
