Veterinary Technician (Information Technology)

Duties:

  • Responsible for observing, monitoring, documenting, and caring for a variety of laboratory animals. 
  • Responsible for training of new staff regarding proper techniques and procedures when dealing with laboratory animals.
  • Assists with research procedures including administering anesthesia, restraining animals, and conducting procedures.
  • Conducts daily rounds, physical examination of the animals, and documents the animals health status.
  • Under veterinary supervision, provides treatment as needed for the animals. 
  • Evaluates animals upon receipt. 
  • Restrains animals during exams or procedures.
  • Collects blood, urine, feces, tissues for analysis and other samples.
  • Ships and receives test materials.
  • Monitors a variety of animals and rodent sentinels.
  • Monitors health surveillance for all species within DCM census.
  • Serves as liaison to the Veterinarian in providing health care to the animals.
  • Administer daily treatments and medications for animals.
  • Assists or provides routine and emergency medical treatment.
  • Trains new staff to include but not limited to animal handling, restraint, animal husbandry, injections, oral gavage, ear tagging, animal transport, gender determination, and administering and/or monitoring anesthesia.
  • May clean and sterilize instruments, equipment, and rooms
  • Maintains complete and accurate medical records for each animal, to include but not limited to test results, dosages administered, and animal health conditions.
  • Maintains annual, semi-annual, and monthly schedules of vaccines, weights, nail trims, new arrivals exams and other similar, reoccurring events for multiple species in accordance with the health calendar.
  • Attends various veterinary rounds and departmental meetings.
  • Performs on-call requirements as assigned to include weeknights, weekends, and holiday rotations.
  • Participates in generation of study-related documents, Standard Operation Procedures (SOP), and IACUC and IBC protocols.
  • Ensures Comparative Medicine stays compliant with institutional policies related to all animal activities including IACUC, IBC, OLAW, USDA, and AAALAC.
  • Assists with husbandry staff duties, to include but not limited to working in cage wash, conducting cage change out, and other day-to-day operation duties of a rodent facility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor to successfully fulfill the functions of the position.

Required education:  Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology

Skills:

  • Knowledge of animal husbandry and physiology.
  • Knowledge of procedures used to restrain and handle the animals.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to perform the day-to-day duties of the facility.
  • Ability to determine if there is a problem, evaluate, and discuss possible options with the Veterinarian.
  • Ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to train other employees on animal husbandry, handling techniques, and laboratory orientation.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player. 
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be detail oriented.

Certifications:

  • Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

    • Standing for prolonged periods.
    • Manual dexterity.
    • Sitting, stooping, bending, reaching, climbing, and lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Environmental:
    • Animal Facility Environment.
    • Exposure to animal dander, odors, biting, and scratching.
    • Exposure to biohazardous material and chemicals.
