Research Scientist I, RNA Capping (Biotech)

The Research Department at New England Biolabs (NEB) invites applications for a Research Scientist focused on mechanistic research on mRNA capping and cap-modifying enzymes and technology development on capped mRNA synthesis. Viral mRNA capping enzymes from Vaccinia virus and Faustovirus are being used in cap incorporation in lab and manufacturing scales. We are continuing our effort to better understand the mechanistic properties of these complex enzymes through mechanistic research and development of assays that can be deployed by the research and manufacturing community. The ideal candidate will thrive in a highly collaborative and intellectually open environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement biochemical research on viral mRNA capping enzymes and RNA 5' modifying enzymes

  • Design and implement the development of capped mRNA synthesis technologies

  • Develop and implement enzyme assays to address mechanistic questions and assess capped mRNA synthesis technologies

  • Formulate testable hypotheses based on structural information

  • Publish and present novel research findings in scientific journals and conferences.

  • Assist in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate interns.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Recent Ph.D. in biochemistry or related discipline.

  • Solid track record in enzyme kinetics and enzyme-ligand interactions research

  • Experience in assay development and implementation.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively handle multiple projects.

  • Demonstrated scientific communication in both formal and informal settings.

  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong work ethic, emphasizing both efficiency and quality of work.
