Financial Analyst (Legal)

FINANCIAL ANALYST
Under the direction of the Controller and the Chief Financial Officer and according to established Firm policies and procedures, The Financial Analyst is responsible for assisting the Controller in preparation of monthly management reporting to the Firm's Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Firm Management; in addition, working with the Marketing department and others in pricing exercises for new client matters. The Financial Analyst is also responsible for analyses of variances to the Firm's budget, as well as work on special “on-demand” projects, for Firm Management as required. Maintains professionalism and strict confidentiality in all client and Firm matters. Duties to include but not limited to the following.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in the preparation of the Firm's annual budget and reforecasts including the design of departmental data templates and prepare supporting schedules for Firm Management.
Assist in the preparation of monthly management reports for the Firm's Executive and Operating Committee and Board of Directors.
Responsible for overseeing the preparation and analysis of various data matrixes for many of the Firm's third party surveys that cover financial, headcount and or diversity related data that must be completed each year.
Analyze and review actual operating variances to the Firm's budget and quarterly revised projections on multiple levels including all offices and individual departmental operations. Follow up with department heads for explanations when necessary.
Work with the Controller and CFO to monitor and maintain the over $3 million in practice development allowances issued to all Partners and select other attorneys which allow them to generate and grow their respective books of business. Each week a report is prepared in a user friendly format that allows all the Firm's accounting departments to make sure that no reimbursements are made in excess of these set budgets.
Work with various administrative departments and or practice group department heads to create models, presentations, worksheets, etc. that will assist them in the current project endeavors that they are working on
Utilizes system data and complex models to analyze /evaluation different components of the financial performance of the firm.
Perform special projects as requested.
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or equivalent and 6 or more years financial-related experience preferably in a large legal or professional services firm; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Familiarity with accounting processes and reporting requirements used by a large national law firm or professional services environment, as well as, working with multi-layered reporting concepts such as office, department, practice area, etc.
Computer proficient experience with advanced Excel Skills required, working knowledge of Microsoft Office software applications including Word, and PowerPoint as well as knowledge of accounting and billing systems software preferred.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to communicate with courtesy and diplomacy, efficiently follow written and verbal instructions, provide information, and maintain effective relationships with a diverse group of attorneys, clients, staff, and outside contacts.
Analytical skills requiring an aptitude for detail, precision, and logic with comprehensive knowledge of complex accounting principles and practices in order to conduct detailed analyses of accounting operations, financial overviews/projections, budget variations, and specialized financial reports.
Excellent organizational skills including record keeping, data collection, and system information. Ability to compile and analyze complex data and furnish information in detailed report format, written correspondence, e-mail, or verbally.
Exhibit high degree of initiative and critical-thinking skills in exercising independent judgment and making decisions in managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, detail-oriented work environment.
Ability to perform complex mathematical calculations and apply mathematical concepts when computing, reconciling balances, verifying numerical data, analyzing budget projections, and preparing various financial/accounting reports.
Proactive with excellent problem resolution and follow-through skills. Ability to identify and analyze complex financial/accounting issues and problems and to recommend and implement solutions.
Ability to occasionally retrieve and distribute files, written documentation, or office supplies weighing up to 10 pounds.
Work occasionally requires more than 37.5 hours per week to perform the essential duties.
