Mechanical Engineer - Electrical Systems Engineering (Architecture)

Purpose:
MTD Products is seeking a mechanical engineer to design electronic modules and assemblies used in battery electric outdoor power equipment and accessories. The candidate should be disciplined, self-motivated and results oriented. The ideal candidate is “hand-on”, passionate about continuous improvement and thrives in a fast-paced environment. Successful candidate will become a key member of MTD's Electrical Systems Engineering Product Development Team.
Essential Duties:
• Work with our electrical hardware and software team to design electronic module for outdoor power equipment from concept to mass production including but not limited to: Embedded system controllers, motor controls, DC to DC power supplies, sensors systems and user interfaces
• Lead projects working with electrical hardware engineers and embedded programmers to integrate designs into fully validated modules that achieve all design requirements
• Develop and specify system, module and component requirements by working with product marketing and platform engineering teams
• Manage part and group drawing revisions within CAD and PLM software systems
• Manage project Bills of Material
• Verify designs by through simulation, testing and experimentation
• Ensure design compliance with applicable worldwide standards including ANSI, UL and ISO regulations
• Develop and execute test plans to validate designs throughout all project stages
• Interpret and record testing results, evaluate data, and prepare written test reports
• Review and approve PPAP documentation for production part release process
• Support product platform teams on integration of module designs into final “finished product” designs
• Keep current with technical advancements and worldwide regulations and standards
• Participate in a disciplined phase gate process and design reviews through concept, design, verification, commercialization and project closure
Specialized Knowledge/Skills:
• Ability to understand basic battery electric driven systems including interactions between mechanical, electrical hardware and software
• Ability to work with product marketing and platform teams to understand product development roadmap goals
• Ability to work within a cross functional team including quality, supply chain, manufacturing and service
• Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time
• Experience working with injection molded plastic parts, stampings and/or die-castings as well as rapid prototyping technologies such as FDM and 3D printing
• Familiarity with high volume manufacturing processes including fabrication and assembly line knowledge is a preferred
• Knowledge of New Product Development processes including the business case concepts that support project approval
• Strong professional skills including project management, time management, verbal and written communication and organizational skills
• Strong interpersonal skills including teamwork and having a positive, “can do” attitude
• Organized and detail oriented
Other Desired Experience/Skills
• Prior experience with any of the following is a plus:
o Outdoor power equipment
o Automotive, agriculture or construction equipment
o Lithium Ion battery power product design
• Experience designing high volume consumer products
• Proficient in using 3D CAD modeling software, Siemens NX preferred
• Experience with Teamcenter PLM
• Experience with PPAP process
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications
• Comfortable getting hands dirty working on outdoor power equipment when needed
Education/Experience Requirements:
• Possess a BS or higher degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3 to 5 years of product development or related design experience
Work Environment:
• Ability and desire to work in office setting as well as prototyping shop
• Willing to work on outdoor power equipment in outdoor environment when needed
• Able to lift (up to 40lb), reach, bend otherwise work on and around outdoor power equipment such as lawn tractors, snow throwers and handheld power tools
Travel:
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required up to 10%
