The provision of laboratory services by the performance of clinical laboratory procedures and related tasks for the clinical laboratory and the areas of microbiology and molecular diagnostics.
Performance of analytical procedures, using manual and automated methods, and through a variety of clinical laboratory methodologies (e.g., manual/visual plate reading, microscopy, Identification and Susceptibility, rapid-testing, molecular testing, etc.). In this function, the technologist must be able to perform all required calibration, quality control, statistical calculations and other process control and mathematical functions. Associate must also be able to understand concepts such as linearity, and standard deviation, as it applies to the performance of analytical testing in a clinical laboratory. Specific procedures performed depend upon the associate's specific assignment, for example, identifies bacteriological organisms in Microbiology, or performs rapid tests, including molecular testing.
Microbiology performs a variety of microbiological procedures in order to cultivate, isolate and identify microorganisms in all different specimen types, such as skin scrapings, exudates, body fluids, and surgical specimens. The microbiologist will conduct routine and specialized procedures, including bacteriological, virological, mycological and parasitological assays for use in diagnosing and treating disease. The Medical Technologist in Microbiology will verify accuracy of findings, identify test inconsistencies, and take appropriate action to make corrections and resolve problems.
