Government Relations Program Manager (Project Management)
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Government Relations Program Manager actively supports the successful operation of the AAN's advocacy program by supporting initiatives in the AAN's Washington, DC office. The position contributes to a team-based approach to policy development through monitoring and analyzing state and federal legislative proposals. Implements the AAN's grassroots advocacy activities and monitors engagement trends.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Health Policy
• Support the development of AAN legislative policies and positions on select federal and state issues
• Draft organization comments and positions in support of policy priorities
• Track and research select legislative policy issues and recommend courses of action in consultation with the Director, Congressional Affairs
• Draft status reports on AAN advocacy priorities/emerging issues, trends, and analysis of the legislative environment
• Develop educational resources for policymakers
• Serve as the primary issue lead and internal expert for select AAN issue priorities
• Primary contact for the grassroots advocacy software program, database, and user interface
• Coordinate action alert distributions and analyze trends, usage, and reach
Collaboration
• Participate in the internal policy team, which is responsible for the coordination and strategy development of key payment, regulatory, or legislative issues affecting neurology
• Participate in the internal state advocacy policy team; taking the lead on select policy initiatives in assigned states
• Participate in issue advocacy groups and coalitions with voluntary health associations, peer societies, and other stakeholders as needed
• Coordinate review of sign-on letters and track actions taken
• Attend Congressional meetings, fundraisers, other local meetings or policy events as needed
Advocacy Program
• Provide logistical support to the AAN's delegation to the American Medical Association's House of Delegates
• Attend committee meetings, advocacy programs or other events as needed
• Maintain regular contact with Minneapolis office

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
• Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field is required
Experience:
• Minimum of 1 year of experience is required
• Experience studying or working on health care policy is preferred
• Experience working on Capitol Hill or with state or federal legislation is preferred
Experience with Labor, Health and Human Services subcommittee appropriations is preferred
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Demonstrated advanced oral and written communication skills are required
• Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office, specifically in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required
• Anticipates needed actions; plans and follows through with work activities; dependable and focused on getting things done to achieve goals is required
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships is required
• Demonstrated customer service skills sufficient to provide prompt, courteous and accurate information to internal and external customers in person, on the phone and through written and electronic correspondence is required
• Knowledge of Quorum or similar government relations software is preferred
• Knowledge of federal or state policy, advocacy, grassroots and/or political affairs is preferred
ADDITIONAL POSITION INFORMATION:
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Travel Requirements: Occasional travel required – approximately 5%.
Location: Washington, DC and is identified as hybrid (required to work in the office with the ability to work remotely part of the week)
Schedule: Some evenings and weekends required
Physical Requirements: Standard office setting, with ability to sit for long periods of time, occasional use of stairs; regular use of computer and office equipment, lifting up to 10 lbs.
